Organizing a Math Trivia Contest : CAS project

LO1: Identify Own Strengths and Develop Areas for Growth
Organizing the Math Trivia Tournament allowed me to assess both my strengths and areas for improvement. I realized that my ability to create engaging and challenging math questions was a key strength, as I ensured the difficulty level was balanced for all participants. However, I identified my need to improve time management, particularly in coordinating rounds and ensuring a smooth flow of events. Managing the crowd and contestants on stage was challenging, as miscommunications occasionally led to confusion during the questioning process. This experience helped me recognize the importance of structuring events efficiently while maintaining the enthusiasm of participants.

LO2: Demonstrate That Challenges Have Been Undertaken, Developing New Skills
One of the biggest challenges I faced was structuring the tournament in a way that was both competitive and fun. Ensuring fairness while keeping the competition engaging required thorough planning. I had to develop new skills in event organization, particularly in creating a point system that rewarded accuracy while allowing room for strategic play. Additionally, handling unexpected delays and adapting to last-minute changes enhanced my problem-solving skills. Finding valid and well-balanced questions was more difficult than expected, requiring me to filter through many sources to ensure their accuracy and relevance.

LO3: Demonstrate How to Initiate and Plan a CAS Experience
From conceptualization to execution, the tournament required meticulous planning. I had to draft a detailed plan, set a timeline, and delegate responsibilities to ensure everything ran smoothly. Creating trivia questions, setting up the rules, and coordinating with teachers and students required careful consideration. Managing contestants on stage while maintaining engage ment for the audience was another hurdle, requiring careful coordination. My ability to anticipate potential issues and plan accordingly played a crucial role in ensuring the event was successful.

LO4: Show Commitment and Perseverance in CAS Experiences
The success of the tournament was not an overnight achievement—it took weeks of preparation, refining questions, and setting up logistics. There were moments when the workload felt overwhelming, but my commitment to delivering a quality event pushed me forward. Managing miscommunications, particularly regarding the timing and delivery of questions, tested my patience and adaptability. However, I consistently followed up with team members, adjusted the format when needed, and ensured everything was ready on the day of the event. The perseverance I demonstrated reinforced my dedication to making the experience rewarding for everyone involved.

LO5: Demonstrate the Skills and Recognize the Benefits of Working Collaboratively
While I was the primary organizer, collaboration played a crucial role in bringing the event to life. I worked closely with teachers to gain approval, fellow students were in the core team in the question-making process as well as to ensure that overall tournament runs smoothly. Managing the crowd effectively required teamwork, as core team members helped maintain order and ensure that participants followed the rules. Recognizing the importance of teamwork, I delegated tasks effectively, which helped streamline the event such as finding mathematical topics someone was well versed with and tasking them to create or find questions for the same. This experience reinforced that working collaboratively leads to a smoother and more efficient outcome.

LO6: Demonstrate Engagement With Issues of Global Significance
Mathematics is a universal language that transcends borders, and organizing this tournament helped promote a culture of analytical thinking and problem-solving among students. By encouraging participants to engage with mathematical concepts in a fun and interactive way, I contributed to fostering a deeper appreciation for STEM education. In a world that increasingly relies on data and mathematical reasoning, promoting numeracy and logical thinking is of global significance. By making the competition engaging and accessible, I played a role in encouraging students to develop critical thinking skills that are essential in various global contexts.

LO7: Recognize and Consider the Ethics of Choices and Actions
Ensuring fairness and integrity in the competition was paramount. I had to carefully consider the rules to prevent any unfair advantages and maintain transparency in the scoring process. Miscommunications during the questioning process occasionally led to disputes, requiring me to make fair and ethical decisions on the spot. Additionally, I ensured that all students had equal access to resources and a fair chance at winning. Ethical decision-making was central to the event’s success, as it reinforced the values of honesty, respect, and sportsmanship among participants.

Organizing the Math Trivia Tournament was a rewarding experience that allowed me to apply my leadership, problem-solving, and collaboration skills while making a meaningful impact. Despite the challenges of managing a large crowd, ensuring clear communication, and maintaining a competitive yet enjoyable atmosphere, it was a true testament to the values of CAS. This experience provided a platform for both personal growth and academic engagement in mathematics.
