Participating in the PennSEM Business Case Competition was an excellent experience that challenged me out of my comfort zone, enabling me to acquire valuable skills while working in a competitive and dynamic environment. We did not reach the finals however getting in the top 16 teams was a great experience. Not only did this experience improve my business and finance knowledge, but it also improved my collaboration, problem-solving, and communication skills. Looking back at my experience, I can see how it relates to all CAS learning outcomes.
LO1: Identify personal strengths and improve on areas of weakness
As from the time I entered the competition, I was compelled to realize my weak and strong points. I already had a research and thinking skill but had to enhance my ability of presenting thoughts briefly and effectively under pressure. Through teamwork discussions and criticisms, I enhanced my decision-making and public speaking skills significantly.
LO2: Demonstrate that problems have been tackled, new skills learned along the way
The competition was not without challenges. The case that we were assigned to solve involved rigorous analysis and planning within a given time limit. There were moments when our group had conflicting opinions and the looming specter of deadlines over our heads. Rather than getting frustrated, however, we pushed through, reworking our plans and learning from our errors. This experience also taught me how resilience and adaptability are needed in the process of overcoming challenges.
LO3 : Initiate and Plan a CAS experience
Scheduling and initiating our work on the PennSEM Business Case Competition allowed us to stay organized and be productive under pressure. By setting definite goals and splitting the work based on individual skill sets, we could ensure that financial analysis, market research, and presentation development were all properly addressed. A good plan allowed us to stay on track and meet deadlines so that we could systematically develop our ideas. When unexpected issues arose, such as unsound early assumptions, our planning capability enabled us to reassess quickly and modify our approach without loss of direction. This event illustrated how sound planning not only increases efficiency but also provides a solid foundation for reacting to unforeseen issues
LO4: Show commitment to and persistence in CAS experiences
Preparation for the competition required commitment and determination. Our team was on the job day and night researching the market, coming up with creative ideas, and working out our ultimate presentation. We experienced times of tiredness and doubt, but each other’s desire to provide a solid proposal spurred us forward. The determination we showed in the course of the competition re-affirmed my capacity to persevere with long-term objectives regardless of challenges.
LO5: Demonstrate the ability and recognize the benefits of collaborative working
Perhaps the best part of this competition was learning how to work together as a diverse team. Everyone on the team had different ways and skill sets, and we needed to find out how to use each other’s strengths to our advantage. This activity helped me improve my listening, communication, and compromise skills, all of which are necessary for teamwork. I have greater respect now for the ability of collaboration in bringing success.
LO6: Illustrate interaction with issues of global concern
Our case study had serious global and ethical concerns. We had to balance corporate social responsibility and sustainability in deciding the impact of our recommendations on various stakeholders. Our experience thus mirrored my grasp of the role of ethics in business decision-making and ethical decision-making processes in itself.
LO7: Identify and take into account the ethics of decisions and actions
The competition also brought ethics challenges that tested the ability to apply fairness, integrity, and transparency throughout the process. We were thus compelled to address the point of profitability by creating solutions that are absolutely viable and ethical as we could afford. Therefore, it highlighted for me the role of ethics aspects in doing business and resulted in my effort to enhance the moral scope at the working place.
Overall, the PennSEM Business Case Competition was a transformative experience that pushed me beyond my expectations. It sharpened my abilities, opened my eyes, and continued to foster my passion for collaboration and ethical decision-making. Above all, it instilled in me the importance of perseverance, flexibility, and ongoing learning. This experience has been directly applicable to my personal and professional development, and I look forward enthusiastically to applying these lessons to future challenges.
