I recently volunteered in the logistics team during the LIT Fest, an event celebrating creativity and literature. My role was to maintain decorum in the Atrium and assist students in the book cover-making activity. This required me to guide students from Grades 7 to 12, ensure they had the necessary resources like paper and paints, and help them bring their creative ideas to life. The experience aligned with SDG 4: Quality Education by fostering creativity and collaboration among students and embodied the IB learner profile attribute of being a Communicator.
LO1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
This experience highlighted my strength in communication, as I effectively explained the activity to students from diverse grades and guided them in executing their ideas. However, I also realized areas for growth, such as managing multiple tasks simultaneously, especially during moments of high demand for resources. This insight has motivated me to work on my time management and organizational skills to handle such situations better in the future.
LO5: Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively
Collaboration was essential in my role, as I had to work closely with fellow volunteers and students. By coordinating with my team to restock materials promptly and sharing ideas to maintain decorum, we ensured the activity ran smoothly. I also witnessed the benefits of teamwork, as it created a positive and supportive environment where everyone’s contributions were valued, ultimately enhancing the students’ creative experience.
LO7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
Volunteering at the LIT Fest required me to make ethical decisions, such as ensuring fair distribution of resources and treating all students with respect and patience. I had to manage situations where some students wanted to take extra materials, balancing their enthusiasm with the need to provide equal opportunities to others. These decisions reinforced the importance of fairness and inclusivity in creating a positive learning environment.
Conclusion
Volunteering at the LIT Fest was a fulfilling experience that allowed me to identify my strengths, develop teamwork skills, and make ethical choices. By promoting SDG 4: Quality Education and embodying the learner profile attribute of a Communicator, I contributed to a meaningful event that celebrated creativity and collaboration. The lessons I gained will continue to guide me in future endeavors.
