Bal Mela Volunteering – Service

Bal Mela was an intense yet rewarding experience that pushed me beyond my comfort zone. Tasked with teaching basketball to a large group of underprivileged children in scorching heat, I encountered various challenges ranging from language barriers to managing an energetic crowd of over 30 kids in one session and over 400 overall with only one teammate. Despite these hurdles, I adapted, improvised, and ultimately created a fun and engaging learning experience.

LO1: Identifying Strengths and Areas for Growth

Initially, I believed my basketball knowledge and leadership skills were enough to guide the children effectively. However, I quickly realized that coaching requires more than just technical expertise—it demands patience, adaptability, and clear communication. Many children struggled to understand basic techniques, and some weren’t serious about learning. Through trial and error, I identified strategies to maintain discipline while keeping the sessions (as schools changed and new students came) engaging. This experience helped me grow as a leader and develop a deeper understanding of effective teaching methods.

LO2: Taking on Challenges and Developing New Skills

One of the biggest challenges was overcoming the language barrier. Many children spoke little to no English, and my knowledge of their native language (gujarati) made verbal communication difficult since my teammate who was more skilled in the sport couldn’t speak the same and he couldn’t explain them the full skillset effectively. To address this, we relied on hand signals, demonstrations, and simplified instructions to bridge the gap. Additionally, managing over 30 children with just one net and one teammate required constant improvisation. I had to design engaging drills that kept all students involved while ensuring fair play. These obstacles pushed me to refine my problem-solving skills and think on my feet.

LO3: Planning & Initiating a CAS Experience

Before the event, I planned structured exercises that balanced fun and skill development. The session included:

  • Basic dribbling drills to develop ball-handling skills
  • Shooting exercises focusing on form and accuracy
  • Passing drills to emphasize teamwork and coordination
Although the original plan required modifications due to unexpected challenges, having a foundation allowed me to adapt efficiently and ensure the session remained productive while taking into account time constraints since I didn’t expect the volume of children.

LO4: Perseverance & Commitment

The extreme heat, lack of proper equipment, and sheer number of children made this experience mentally and physically exhausting. Many students lost focus, struggled to grasp techniques, or treated the session as playtime rather than structured learning. Despite these difficulties, I remained committed to making the experience meaningful for them. By continuously adjusting my approach and maintaining my energy, I ensured that every child had an opportunity to engage and improve.

LO5: Working Collaboratively & Learning from Others

With only one teammate on the hoop, effective teamwork was crucial. We split responsibilities—while one managed drills, the other provided one-on-one guidance to struggling students. This division of labor helped us maximize efficiency and provide personalized attention where needed. Additionally, I learned from the children themselves—their enthusiasm and resilience despite difficult circumstances reminded me of the importance of patience and encouragement in coaching.

LO6: Connecting to Global Issues (Education & Equal Opportunity)

Bal Mela highlighted the disparities in access to sports education. Many of these children had never played structured basketball before, despite their enthusiasm for learning. This experience underscored the importance of providing equal opportunities in sports, aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) #4 (Quality Education). Encouraging sports at a grassroots level fosters physical fitness, teamwork, and discipline—skills that extend beyond the court into everyday life.

LO7: Ethical Considerations in Teaching & Sportsmanship

Ethics played a key role in this experience. Ensuring fair play, balancing teams, and giving each child equal opportunities to participate were my primary concerns. Some children were naturally more skilled than others, and it was crucial to encourage a positive learning environment where everyone felt included. Furthermore, promoting values like teamwork, respect, and perseverance was as important as teaching basketball techniques.

Connection to the Learner Profile

This experience helped me develop several IB Learner Profile attribute:

  • Communicator – I learned to convey instructions effectively despite language barriers and other communication efforts being futile due to the bustling atmosphere leading to difficulties in the same

Final Reflection

Teaching basketball at Bal Mela was more than just a CAS activity—it was a transformative experience that tested my patience, leadership, and adaptability. Overcoming challenges like language barriers, high temperatures, and managing a large group of energetic kids was no easy task. However, by staying committed and adjusting my approach, I turned potential setbacks into learning opportunities. This experience has reinforced my belief in the power of perseverance and the impact of sports in fostering personal and social growth. Going forward, I aim to use these lessons in future CAS experiences and beyond.
