Cross Country Running – A Test of Endurance and Perseverance – Activity

As part of my CAS experience, I embarked on a cross-country running challenge where I completed 3, 3K runs ( two consecutively and 1 one week apart). This journey was far from easy. I faced multiple challenges such as the heat, improper running gear, and my own lack of fitness. However, by pushing through these obstacles, I developed resilience, perseverance, and a newfound appreciation for physical endurance. This experience directly aligns with CAS strands under ‘Activity’ and contributes to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal of Good Health and Well-being.

LO1 – Identifying Strengths and Areas for Growth

At the start of this experience, I believed that I had adequate or slightly below average stamina but lacked proper running technique and endurance for long distances. After my first run, I realized that my cardio fitness needed significant improvement, and my choice of running shoes greatly impacted my performance. The discomfort I felt in my legs after the first run made it clear that I needed better preparation in terms of warm-up, stretching, and recovery. Through this realization, I understood the importance of self-assessment and adapting to physical challenges, which are crucial elements of personal growth.

LO2 – Taking on Challenges and Developing New Skills

Running 3 kilometers may sound simple, but repeating it three times in a week under physically demanding conditions made this experience mentally and physically taxing. The scorching heat and exhaustion were major barriers, making me want to quit at times. However, I learned to pace myself, control my breathing, and push through moments of discomfort. By the third run, I had developed a rhythm, regulated my speed more efficiently, and understood how mental discipline plays a huge role in endurance sports. This experience allowed me to build a growth mindset where I embraced difficulties instead of avoiding them.

LO3 – Initiating and Planning a cas experience

Planning and executing this cross-country running challenge required careful consideration of multiple factors. Initially, I set a goal to complete three 3K runs within a short time frame, ensuring that I could track my progress and push my endurance limits. I had to plan my running schedule strategically to allow for recovery while maintaining consistency. Additionally, I researched proper warm-up and cool-down techniques to prevent injuries and improve performance. This experience taught me the significance of structured goal-setting and adaptability. Despite my initial plans, I had to make adjustments based on my physical condition and external factors like heat and fatigue.

LO4 – Perseverance and Commitment

One of the most defining aspects of this experience was my perseverance. After the first run, my legs were sore, and my energy levels were depleted. Completing the second and third runs in the same week was even more difficult as the soreness carried over. However, I remained committed to my goal and refused to give up. This experience taught me the importance of consistency and determination. It is easy to give up when faced with discomfort, but real growth happens when we push beyond our limits.

Connection to the Learner Profile

This experience allowed me to develop two key IB Learner Profile attributes: Resilience and Risk-taking. I demonstrated resilience by pushing through physical discomfort and the challenging weather conditions. Additionally, I was a risk-taker since I had never run such distances before and was aware of potential issues like shin splints and muscle strain. Yet, I took on the challenge and completed all three runs successfully.

Final Reflection

Overall, this experience has been an eye-opener. It has reinforced my belief in the power of perseverance and the importance of pushing myself beyond my comfort zone. Although I faced difficulties, I learned that with the right mindset and preparation, I could overcome them. Going forward, I plan to integrate more endurance training into my fitness routine and apply the lessons I learned about resilience and commitment to other aspects of my life.

This cross-country challenge was more than just a physical test; it was a lesson in discipline, endurance, and mental strength. It has motivated me to continue working on my fitness and embrace new challenges with confidence.
