Enrichmnt is an NGO run by friends of mine. I have been volunteering for Enrichmnt since the past 2 years. Our job is to go to SMC schools every Saturday and teach the underprivileged kids new skills. We usually go there for an hour, interact with the kids and teach them the skills.
LO5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
As I was the manager of my branch, I had to communicate with all the members of my branch as to whether they were going to come or not, if not then what was the reason behind not coming, I also had to make sure that all of them were reaching on time so that we could start teaching without any delays. Not only this, but we also always teach in groups of two volunteers per class, which have about 30 children so we also had to communicate with the other volunteer, if one was teaching then the other had to go around and check whether the kids were understanding or not, or were they writing or not.
LO6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance
Quality education is a global issue that needs to be addressed urgently. Even in the schools that we go to, the school’s infrastructure is so poorly made, the buildings are several years old, many of the classes don’t even have benches or tables, the little kids usually sit on the floor and write. Not only this, they don’t even have basis resources such as books or pencils, this might be because they can’t easily afford such things. These kids aren’t getting the quality of education that they deserve. I like volunteering for this NGO, even though it’s at a smaller scale, we’re still trying our best to make an impact and helping bring a change into the community.
LO7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
Many of the teachers were concerned as to whether we’ll be able to teach the kids or not, since we ourselves are students. But we convinced them, that we were qualified to teach them, every time we went we went a plan, we showed them what we were going to teach on each day, the teachers also sat with us in class and observed our teaching this helped reassure them. We also had to be very careful while dealing with the kids, we had to talk to them gently, not be too strict, but also not be very lenient.
Joining enrichmnt really has been a really great decision. I have been a part of it since 2 years, and I wish to continue my work as a branch manager. I love teaching and interacting with those kids. Seeing the smiles on their faces is always the highlight of my Saturday’s.
