Bal Mela Reflection
Bal Mela has been one of the most rewarding and challenging projects I have undertaken. This year, I took full responsibility for organizing the event from start to finish, with the support of a few volunteers. Bal Mela is an annual event held for a day, where students from various government schools, across different grades, come together to engage in a variety of fun and educational activities. The goal is to create a space where the kids can learn, play, and have fun while building connections with each other and the volunteers.
My role involved planning and managing every aspect of the event. I assigned roles and responsibilities to the volunteers, organized resources, and coordinated different activity zones based on themes like arts and crafts, games, dance, and music. I also managed the communication side by sending out emails and ensuring that everything ran smoothly on the day of the event. The process of organizing such a large-scale event was both demanding and rewarding.
Connection with Learning Outcomes:
- LO1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth.
Taking charge of Bal Mela helped me discover my strengths in leadership and organization. I realized that I am good at managing people and coordinating large events. However, I also identified areas for growth, such as improving my ability to delegate tasks more effectively and handling unexpected challenges more calmly. - LO3 – Initiate and plan a CAS experience.
Planning Bal Mela from scratch required careful attention to detail and strategic thinking. From assigning volunteers to organizing activity zones and ensuring resource availability, I had to anticipate potential challenges and create backup plans to ensure a smooth execution. - LO4 – Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience.
The process wasn’t always easy—coordinating with volunteers, managing last-minute changes, and handling unexpected issues required patience and persistence. However, my commitment to making the event successful kept me motivated, and seeing the kids enjoy themselves made it all worth it. - LO5 – Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively.
Although I took the lead, the success of Bal Mela wouldn’t have been possible without the help of the volunteers. We worked together to manage the different activity zones, troubleshoot problems, and engage with the kids. Effective communication and teamwork were essential in creating a fun and organized event. - LO7 – Recognise and consider the ethics of choices and actions.
Organizing Bal Mela also involved making ethical decisions, such as ensuring that all students were treated equally and that the activities were inclusive and culturally sensitive. I made sure that the resources were fairly distributed and that all students had an equal opportunity to participate and enjoy themselves.
Bal Mela taught me valuable lessons in leadership, adaptability, and teamwork. It was fulfilling to see the smiles on the children’s faces and to know that my efforts helped create a positive and memorable experience for them.
