Our school organized an event called Global Odyssey, where grade 11 students were given a chance to showcase their business management skills by setting up different stalls like food, games, and entertainment. Me and my 3 friends decided to keep a PS5 gaming stall where people could pay a small amount to play multiplayer games like FIFA. We arranged 4 controllers so that 4 people could play at once, and our main goal was to attract customers, have fun, and earn a profit.
LO1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for personal growth
Through this event, I realized that my strength was my good knowledge about gaming and managing the PS5 setup, which helped us give the visitors a smooth gaming experience. I was also confident about handling the games and explaining the rules to the players. However, I identified a major weakness of mine, which was attracting customers to our stall. Since our stall was in a corner, not many people noticed it, and I struggled to approach people confidently to convince them to play. This made me realize that I need to improve my communication and marketing skills to attract more customers if I ever do something like this in the future.
LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills.
One of the main challenges we faced was less audience attention due to our corner location. This forced us to actively promote our stall by approaching people or sending our friends to spread the word. Another challenge was managing the money and ensuring that everyone got a fair chance to play. Additionally, some games required a strong internet connection, and we had to use our mobile hotspots to keep the game running smoothly. This event helped me develop problem-solving, teamwork, and management skills, which I believe will benefit me in future projects.
LO5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively.
Since this was a group activity, teamwork played a huge role in the success of our stall. We divided tasks like one person managing the money, one handling the crowd, one setting up the game, and one promoting the stall. Working together made things much easier, and I realized that collaboration leads to better efficiency. I also learned that listening to everyone’s ideas helped us come up with creative solutions, like offering discounts to winners, which attracted more people to play. This experience made me understand how group work is essential for successful event management.
Reflection
This event was a great learning experience for me as it gave me a real-life understanding of business management. I learned how to attract customers, manage money, and work with a team. It also helped me understand my strengths and weaknesses, and I now know that I need to improve my communication and persuasive skills to boost sales in future events. Even though we didn’t make a huge profit, the experience and learning were definitely worth it. If I ever get a chance to do something similar again, I would focus more on marketing strategies to bring more customers and make our stall more successful.
