Creative Mela – Creativity

The Creative Mela at Fountainhead is more than just an event, it is the celebration of one’s self-expression, imagination, and artistic mind. From different dance forms to the usage of vivid colors, I was a volunteer along with Yomika Kheni (A classmate) for the tie-dye tshirt activity which was planned by us. This experience was remarkable as we planned everything ourselves and got the chance to take up responsibilities for making the younger kids (Grade 5 and 6) learn new things about arts.

LO 1: Identify your own strengths and develop areas for personal growth.

I volunteered for the creative mela held at Fountainhead because I was confident with my leadership skills and I knew that I will be able to educate and teach the younger kids about a different type of art. Tie-dye has always been my personal favourite activity in creative mela and I had always aspired myself to be teaching others about it. This event allowed me to test my coordination with others, check my leadership skills, and also improve my patience because I had to teach every student separately incase if they have any issues in the activity. My main issue was time-management because I had to skip my Summative Assessment in order to participate in this event but I was able to cope up with the class discussion and attempt my paper again accordingly. Apart from that, there was another issue, we did not have all the resources which we ordered and we had to manage with whatever we had available and that was a big task as managing to use 5 cups for 40 students under pressure was tough. Although, Yomika and I were able to handle it properly and produce a good outcome.

LO 3 – Initiate and plan a CAS experience

We had around 3-4 meetings before the event to plan and visualise how we wanted everything to work out and we also had to check if the resource criteria were met and everything was as planned. Me and Yomika had already divided the task and that made it very easy for us to manage our activity. We had also maintained a google sheet wherein everything about this event was noted and it was more convenient because on the D-day, we would require to go through the attendance and steps of how the flow of the activity shall happen.

LO 5 – Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively

I personally believe that the Creative Mela was only successful because of the coordination and teamwork, everyone had put in a lot of effort and everything went smoothly due to the same. One of the most important takeaways from this experience would be the power of collective efforts. One of the problems which we faced were the high number of participants in our activity, Tie-dye is a hands-on activity that needs careful handling of colors and fabric, so we divided responsibilities. Yomika took over the material distribution, while I gave step-by-step demonstrations to help the students create their own unique designs. This division of work allowed the activity to flow efficiently, ensuring that everyone had a chance to participate without long wait times.

LO 6 – Engagement with issues of global significance.

The Tie-Dye Workshop at the Creative Mela not only promises to amuse and entertain with its myriad colors, but it’s also linked to the larger concern of sustainable fashion and ecological footprint. The fashion industry is among the largest polluters and waste producers; fast fashion overspends on textile production, water, and chemicals. By this workshop, we encouraged the students in searching for upcycling and sustainable creativity, preaching the thought that art and fashion can be creative and sustainable too. We also touched upon the use of natural and harmless dyes over synthetic chemical dyes, which are detrimental to the environment. This led to the discussions of green alternatives in the fashion sector and ways individuals can be more mindful in their day-to-day lives.

Overall, the Creative Mela’s Tie-Dye Workshop was a fantastic event that combined sustainability, creativity, and teamwork. It was more than just an art project; it was a chance to learn about upcycling, green fashion, and responsible consumption. We successfully created an interactive and meaningful workshop that allowed participants to be creative while learning about making responsible decisions by working together and solving problems. I learnt from this experience that creativity can bring about change. We can contribute to the creation of a more sustainable and responsible world by making small, deliberate decisions, such as recycling used t-shirts, choosing eco-friendly materials, or spreading awareness. I became aware that learning and doing good can go hand in hand when I saw the participants’ smiles when they saw their tie-dye creations.
