The fun I had volunteering at the Bal Mela cannot be expressed in mere words! It made for a good bonding session with the community and an opportunity to promote fitness, while also allowing kids to learn teamwork. The event organized by Fountainhead School for underprivileged children from government schools across the city involved me as a member of the basketball shooting team.My emphasis was mainly on the children having fun while, at the same time, gently guiding them towards an activity or some entertainment. In addition to giving me the opportunity to confront leadership and communication challenges, this experience also gave me great joy, knowing that I was able to uplift others. It really made me grow in a billion ways I could never really fathom.
LO4 – Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience:
The Bal Mela was where I learned about perseverance and commitment. Those kids were having some basketball difficulties; keeping them interested was not exactly easy. There were times when it felt hard to keep everyone motivated or even see any results right away. But I remained committed to their improvement; I came every day with a positive attitude, a smile, and a willingness to try things out. I just needed a little patience; growth takes time and I was just hoping my efforts would eventually pay off. This has taught me that perseverance is not just about sticking it out when times get tough; it is about being true to a goal, however slowly progress seems to come along. There I learned the importance of constancy; through constancy, I saw the kids build their skills and confidence, which made every moment worth the effort.
LO5 – Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively:
Working with the kids and other volunteers at the Bal Mela was one of the best parts of my time there. Teaching basketball wasn’t just about me; it was about working together as a team. I learned that the success of the sessions depended on how well we all worked together. By collaborating with other volunteers, I got to try different teaching methods and share ideas on how to keep the kids interested. Working with the kids also helped me understand how they learn best, and together, we created a positive and supportive environment where everyone could succeed. This experience taught me that teamwork is the key to achieving our goals, and by working together, we made basketball fun, accessible, and educational for the kids. In the end, the kids’ skills improved, they were more excited about the game, and we all felt proud of what we accomplished as a team.
Conclusion
Looking back on my time at the Bal Mela, I can’t help but feel a sense of gratitude for the incredible impact it had on me. Not only did I get to teach basketball and promote physical fitness, but I also grew as a person and as a leader. Every session was a challenge, but I learned so much from them. I discovered the importance of perseverance, commitment, and collaboration. I realized that teamwork, patience, and dedication are the keys to success. And the best part? I got to make a positive difference in the lives of the kids. I helped them develop skills that went beyond basketball, like teamwork, discipline, and confidence. This experience taught me the power of giving back and the growth that comes from stepping outside your comfort zone. I’m so excited to continue using what I’ve learned to inspire others and make a difference in my community.
