Activity Type: Creativity, Activity & Service
Date: December 15–21, 2024
Location: Kilad, Gujarat
The rural immersion experience in Kilad was an incredible opportunity to apply the skills and values we cultivate in the classroom to real-world settings. This experience was not just a trip but an extension of student learning, connecting to Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills and the attributes of the IB Learner Profile. By stepping outside our comfort zones, we developed critical thinking, community awareness, and problem-solving abilities while engaging with the rural lifestyle firsthand.
Creativity: Cultural Engagement & Innovation
Immersing ourselves in the local culture allowed us to explore creative expression through:
- Warli Art on School Walls: We painted traditional Warli designs, blending our creativity with the cultural heritage of the region.
- Crafting Keychains from Bamboo: Learning traditional crafting techniques, we made beautiful keychains using bamboo, gaining an appreciation for sustainable art.
Through these activities, I realized how creativity can be a bridge between tradition and innovation, preserving cultural art while engaging in hands-on learning
Activity: Physical & Practical Engagement
The trip also pushed us physically, with adventure activities that tested our endurance and perseverance:
- Rappelling & Rock Climbing: Scaling rocky terrains required physical strength and mental resilience, helping us conquer our fears.
- Trekking: Hiking through scenic trails allowed us to appreciate the beauty of Kilad’s natural landscapes while improving our stamina.
These activities reinforced the importance of perseverance and teamwork, as we supported each other through challenges and built stronger bonds.
Service: Community Contribution
Giving back to the community was one of the most fulfilling aspects of the trip. We actively engaged in:
- Playing with Local School Kids: Interacting with the children through games and activities fostered joy, connection, and mutual learning.
- Farming Using the Mattock & Shovel: We participated in agricultural activities, making plant beds and understanding the hard work behind food cultivation.
- Understanding Rural Economics & Daily Life: Bargaining in the local market and dining with locals gave us a deeper appreciation of their way of life.
Unique Experiences: Connecting with Nature & Culture
Beyond structured activities, we had special moments that made this experience truly unforgettable:
- Stargazing Night: One of the most magical nights was spent lying under a blanket of stars, free from city lights, appreciating the vastness of the universe.
- Cultural Rituals: Observing and participating in local rituals deepened our understanding of the traditions and beliefs that shape the community.
Learning Outcomes Addressed:
- Identify Own Strengths & Develop Areas for Growth: This experience helped me understand my ability to adapt to new situations, work under physically demanding conditions, and interact with people from different backgrounds. I also identified areas for improvement, such as patience while farming and endurance in trekking.
- Demonstrate That Challenges Have Been Undertaken & New Skills Developed: Overcoming fears during rappelling, bargaining in a local market, and creating Warli art were all new experiences that tested my abilities. Learning how to farm and understanding the villagers’ daily struggles pushed me to develop new perspectives and practical skills.
- Initiate & Plan a CAS Experience: The immersion experience required planning, from organizing activities for school children to preparing materials for the Warli art project. Ensuring effective execution of these initiatives helped me develop leadership and organizational skills.
- Show Commitment & Perseverance in CAS Experiences: Trekking long distances, engaging in labor-intensive farming, and adapting to a rural lifestyle required dedication. Despite physical exhaustion, I remained committed to making the most of this experience by actively participating in all activities.
- Demonstrate Skills & Recognize Benefits of Collaboration: Teamwork was crucial during adventure activities, art projects, and community interactions. We learned how to communicate effectively, delegate responsibilities, and work together to achieve common goals, strengthening our collaboration skills.
- Engage With Issues of Global Significance: Observing the economic challenges of rural communities deepened my understanding of issues like income inequality, access to education, and sustainability. Engaging with villagers firsthand provided insight into how these challenges can be addressed through ethical and community-driven initiatives.
- Recognize & Consider the Ethics of Choices & Actions: One of the most crucial lessons I learned was the importance of being open-minded and respectful. It was essential to ensure that our actions did not make the villagers feel inferior or uncomfortable. Instead of approaching them with a sense of charity, we treated them as equals, learning from their experiences and embracing their way of life. This reflection made me more conscious of ethical considerations and the impact of my actions on others.
Final Reflection & Takeaways
This experience in Kilad was more than just an excursion—it was a journey of self-discovery, cultural appreciation, and personal growth. From creating art to engaging in physical challenges and community service, every moment contributed to a deeper understanding of the world and myself. The lessons learned here will stay with me, inspiring me to continue engaging with communities and striving for sustainable, ethical living.
