As part of my CAS journey, I had the privilege of teaching ICT to children from underprivileged government schools. This experience was not only rewarding but it lead to different skill developments.

Learning Outcome-1 Identify own strengths and weaknesses

I chose ICT thinking my knowledge and skills in the subject were enough. However, as I stood before the class, I realised that it requires more than subject expertise. Teaching concept to children who were devoid of any understanding of computer was a challenge that I did not anticipate.By the end of the sessions I realised that my subject expertise was’nt enough and I needed to develop stronger communication skills.

Learning Outcome 3 – Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience

Before stepping into the classroom, I had to plan the structure of the lessons carefully. I broke down the ICT topics into simple, manageable parts so that the children could follow along despite having little to no prior exposure. This meant preparing demonstrations, interactive activities, and even backup explanations in case the students found something difficult. I also had to adjust my schedule and coordinate with the school to ensure smooth execution. Through this planning and initiative, I learned how important it is to think ahead, anticipate challenges, and design strategies that make learning more accessible.

Learning Outcome-5 Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively

Sparking the young minds was a team effort.I collaborated with other volunteers who brought different skills to the table. Some were great at management while some had effective communication. We shared ideas, improved lesson plans and had each other’s backs.Through this i learned the impact and importance of collaboration in any task given.

Learning Outcome-6 Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance

Teaching ICT to children who did not have any experience with the subject made me realise a greater global issue, the digital divide- the gap between those who have access to technology and those who don’t is significantly greater. For many of the students it was their first real exposure to computers. I realised how significant this knowledge is in today’s world, where technology plays a key role. At the very last session,I was grateful that i could contribute a little to the rising issue.
