Service – Divyang

Divyang is a charity dedicated to supporting visually impaired children, and as part of my CAS Service experience, we took the initiative to teach blind children how to play football. This experience aimed to build their confidence, improve their physical health, and provide them with an opportunity to engage in sports. As an outside school initiative, this was a unique opportunity for me to plan, collaborate, and contribute to a cause of global significance. The experience was both challenging and fulfilling, as it required me to adapt my approach to make football accessible to visually impaired children while ensuring their safety, enjoyment, and skill development.

Explanation of Learning Outcomes

LO3 – Initiate and plan a CAS experience

Teaching football to blind children required extensive planning and preparation. Since traditional coaching methods would not work, I had to research and develop modified training techniques that focused on verbal cues, sound-based ball tracking, and safe movement guidance. Additionally, I planned structured training sessions that gradually introduced the children to basic football skills such as dribbling, passing, and spatial awareness. This experience helped me develop my leadership, problem-solving, and organizational skills while ensuring that the sessions were both engaging and beneficial for the participants.

LO5 – Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively

This initiative was not something I could do alone. I worked closely with other volunteers, special educators, and the children themselves to create a supportive learning environment. Effective communication and teamwork were essential, as I had to coordinate drills, ensure each child received individual attention, and encourage group participation. By collaborating with experienced mentors, I learned how to adapt my coaching techniques to meet the needs of visually impaired players. This experience reinforced the power of teamwork in making a real impact.

LO6 – Engagement with issues of global significance

Sports and physical activity are fundamental to health and social inclusion, yet people with disabilities often face barriers in accessing these opportunities. This initiative directly addressed the global issue of inclusivity in sports, aligning with efforts to promote equal opportunities for differently-abled individuals. By enabling blind children to experience the joy and benefits of playing football, I contributed to a larger movement advocating for adaptive sports and accessibility for all.

LO7 – Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions

Working with visually impaired children required a deep sense of responsibility and ethical awareness. I had to ensure that my coaching methods were safe, respectful, and empowering. This meant prioritizing the children’s comfort, maintaining clear and encouraging communication, and fostering a positive learning environment. Additionally, I recognized the ethical importance of patience and inclusivity, ensuring that each child felt valued, capable, and motivated to participate in the sport.

Conclusion

My experience with Divyang has been one of the most meaningful and transformative parts of my CAS journey. It has taught me the importance of adaptability, teamwork, and ethical responsibility when working with individuals who face unique challenges. Seeing the joy and confidence in the children as they played football was incredibly rewarding, reinforcing my commitment to using sports as a tool for empowerment and social change. Moving forward, I hope to expand this initiative, recruit more volunteers, and continue advocating for inclusive sports opportunities for people with disabilities.
