For our CAS project, We took the task of hosting an Alumni Connect Session within our school. The aim was to bring in alumni to brief students on what it is to experience, making them aware of the IBDP journey, college life, and career lines. This took a lot of planning, involving coordination with the teachers and a lot of working together to be able to get it done. In spite of the difficulties we encountered, our commitment, diligence, and teamwork made the event a worthwhile and informative experience for alumni and students alike. Through this CAS experience, I was able to develop as an individual, learn necessary skills, and consider the effect of our actions and decisions.
Identifying Strengths and develop Areas for Growth – Learning Outcome 1
Planning an event of this magnitude necessitated that we identify our strengths and weaknesses so that we could allocate tasks effectively. I knew that my area of strength was communication and coordination, and I was able to use this to effectively bridge the gap between alumni and teachers. I also found areas that I needed to work on, including time management and coping with last-minute changes. Along the way, I developed these areas by learning to prioritize, delegate, and remain flexible under stress.
Demonstrates that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills – Learning Outcome 2
Planning this event was not without its challenges. One of the most significant challenges we encountered was contacting alumni and receiving confirmations. Several were preoccupied with their school calendars, complicating finalization of speakers to the session. Besides, it involved logistics planning, venue coordination, and quality assurance on event day, thus requiring instant solving of problems and being flexible. All these learning experiences instilled essential skills of professional email skills, event management, and handling crisis situations that will come in handy in future.
Initiate and Planning the CAS Experience – Learning Outcome 3
This project was started and planned solely by our group of three students. We began by realizing the necessity of such an event, given that most IBDP students have a problem adapting to college life. We defined our purpose and then contacted alumni, worked out with school staff, and formulated a formal agenda for the session. We also organized the event logistics, including reserving the venue, organizing a Q&A session, and advertising the event in the school. Being in charge of this project allowed us to realize the intricacies of planning an event from the ground up, which improved our leadership and strategic planning skills.
Show perseverance and Commitment – Learning Outcome 4
Achieving success for this event needed continued effort and persistence for weeks. Right from the initial contact till the last phase of execution, we faced a number of obstacles like last-minute postponements, technical issues, and time table conflicts. We didn’t get disheartened, though. Instead, we looked for an alternative solution in each case and persisted in what we were set to do. We were eventually rewarded when we could witness the students’ energy and the impression of the words of the alumni on their junior colleagues.
Demonstrates Skills and Benefits of working Collaboratively – Learning Outcome 5
Collaboration was at the center of this project. As a team, we shared tasks according to our strengths—some worked on communication with alumni, while others worked on logistics and promotions. We also collaborated with teachers, who assisted us in finalizing the guest list and offered support with school resources. This collaboration made sure that everything went well on the event day. The experience validated the notion that collaboration increases efficiency and creativity, as varied opinions assisted us in streamlining our method and enhancing the overall event design.
Engagement with issues of Global significance – Learning Outcome 6
Career guidance and education planning are international issues that impact students globally. The high school to college transition can be daunting, and exposure to adequate guidance and mentorship is key to determining a student’s future. By doing this activity, we helped promote a greater cause of student awareness and readiness for academics. Students were able to make sound decisions regarding their own academic and career paths by listening to first-hand experiences of alumni. This experience led me to think about the significance of mentorship and how sharing knowledge can have a positive effect on generations to come.
Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions – Learning Outcome 7
While planning this activity, we kept an eye on the ethical concerns of what we were doing. We needed to make sure that all students were provided with neutral, accurate, and comprehensive information regarding various universities and professional opportunities. We also ensured that no sensitive or individual information was misrepresented throughout the session. Moreover, we showed respect for the time and energy of the alumni by conducting the event in an organized manner and making sure that their efforts were appreciated. Understanding the influence of our decisions made us carry out the event responsibly and professionally.
Final Reflection
The Alumni Connect Session was an extremely fulfilling CAS experience that allowed us to learn and develop as individuals and professionals. It made us work on leadership skills, resilience, and teamwork skills. Most importantly, it reiterated the influence of mentorship and the need to give back to society. Witnessing students derive meaningful takeaways from our activity made every effort worth it. This experience has motivated me to keep initiating effective programs and contribute to others’ academic and personal development.
