As part of my IB CAS experience, I was fortunate enough to be involved in a cricket tournament, an experience that challenged my skills, teamwork, and perseverance. Cricket is my favorite sport, but this tournament challenged me out of my comfort zone, and I improved as a player and as a person.
From intense practice camps to tough games, every minute was taxing in terms of commitment, determination, and collaboration. From planning with the team members, improving batting and bowling skills, or managing the pressure of competition, the tournament was a platform for development and learning.
This experience enriched my cricket technical capabilities and taught me important life lessons about discipline, sportsmanship, and perseverance. In this blog, I shall describe my experience, the obstacles I faced, and how this tournament helped in my overall growth in the spirit of CAS.
LO1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
In the tournament, I observed what I could do and what needed improvement. My greatest strength was that I remained cool during stressful situations, particularly at pivotal moments in the game. During batting or fielding, I remained calm and collected, and my teammates could rely on me at crunch time. In addition, my tactical mind and quick decision-making were advantageous in fielding the proper people and adapting to changing situations in the game.
I also realized some of my weak points wherein I had to improve. I had to develop my batting, particularly against speedy bowlers. It was difficult for me to accurately judge my shots, and this would prove costly at times in terms of missing opportunities for scoring runs. I also needed to improve my stamina since longer matches required physical energy as well as mental endurance. Identifying these loopholes made me work even harder with a focus on improving my footwork, quick response, and overall fitness.
LO2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills.
This experience is directly connected to Learning Outcome 2 (LO2)—demonstrating that I encountered challenges and learned new things. The toughest challenge that I encountered in the tournament was managing pressure moments, particularly when I was playing against difficult teams. Batting under pressure and maintaining concentration during key overs were challenging initially, but with regular practice and guidance from my coach, I improved with time. I practiced enhancing my footwork, enhancing my hand-eye coordination, and making improved decisions in my shots. These abilities not only improved my performance but also raised my confidence level on the field.
Bowling was another area where I had difficulty. At first, I had difficulty keeping a straight line and proper length, conceding too many runs. But through hard work and constant practice, I learned to control my throws, change my speed, and implement smart bowling tactics. This took determination and perseverance, and I learned how important it is to learn from mistakes and always try to get better.
LO5 – Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively.
The most significant lesson that I took away from this experience was collaboration with my teammates. From the very beginning, we understood that to succeed in cricket is less about personal skill but more about how well we can cooperate as a team. We divided our work according to what we need to accomplish—some worked on batting techniques, some on bowling techniques, and some on fielding techniques. This division of labor allowed us to work better and prepare adequately for every game.
There were also periods of extreme pressure, like trying to meet a challenging target or defending a low score. Yet, by talking a lot, trusting each other, and encouraging each other, we stayed concentrated and motivated. We had regular team meetings to review how we played, discover how we could play better, and adjust our game plans. Not only did this improve our team coordination but also developed a feeling of oneness and joint responsibility.
