Karuna Club- Service

Karuna Club is a student-led club for dogs, that aims to establish an environment and create a thriving community that fosters a harmonious co-existence between animals and humans through initiatives such as nutritional support and preventative healthcare.

Learning Outcome 1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
Volunteering at the dog club helped me recognize both my strengths and areas where I could improve. I discovered that I have a natural ability to connect with animals, showing patience and empathy while working with different dogs, including those that were anxious or needed special care. However, I also identified a need to improve my practical skills, such as managing strong or hyperactive dogs and understanding specific training techniques. This self-awareness has guided me to seek more knowledge about dog behavior and training, setting personal goals to enhance my abilities further.

Learning Outcome 2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
Working at the dog club presented various challenges, from cleaning kennels and feeding schedules to assisting in training sessions. Some dogs required more attention and care, particularly those with behavioral issues. I had to adapt quickly, learning how to handle dogs safely, use positive reinforcement techniques, and maintain a calm demeanor in stressful situations. These challenges helped me develop resilience, responsibility, and practical skills in animal care and training, contributing to both my personal growth and the well-being of the dogs.

Learning Outcome 7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
Volunteering in a dog club required me to act ethically and responsibly at all times. This included ensuring the safety and comfort of the animals, treating them with respect, and following ethical guidelines set by the club. I had to make thoughtful decisions, such as how to approach a frightened dog or handle food distribution fairly. Additionally, I learned the importance of advocating for animal welfare, promoting responsible pet ownership, and understanding the ethical implications of how animals are treated. This experience reinforced my commitment to making choices that prioritize the animals’ well-being and contribute positively to the community.

Overall, my experience volunteering at the dog club was highly rewarding. It allowed me to identify my strengths and areas for growth, take on new challenges while developing valuable skills, and make ethical decisions that positively impacted animal welfare. The experience not only strengthened my practical skills and empathy but also deepened my understanding of the responsibilities involved in caring for and protecting animals.
