For three weekends and six engaging sessions, my friends and I had the incredible opportunity to teach mathematics to underprivileged children through interactive activities and games. What started as a simple initiative to help them improve their numeracy skills quickly turned into a meaningful experience filled with learning, laughter, and connection. By incorporating fun challenges and creative games, we aimed to make math easier and more enjoyable. This experience not only allowed us to give back to the community but also helped us grow in patience, communication, and teamwork. Through each session, we witnessed the children’s enthusiasm and progress, reinforcing the true impact of education when made accessible and engaging.
LO 1 : Identify own strength and develop areas for growth
Through this community service, I was able to learn more about my strengths and weaknesses. One of my greatest strengths was that I was able to communicate and interact with the children effectively. I discovered that if I made math more interactive and fun, I was able to keep them engaged and make things simpler for them to learn. My confidence in leading activities and breaking down mathematical concepts also grew throughout the duration of the six sessions.
At the same time, I identified areas where I needed to work on , I could vary teaching methods to suit different learning abilities. Some of the children were easy to learn from, while others needed more individual attention. This challenged me to be patient and creative in presenting issues in different formats. I also learned the importance of planning since each session priorly for the session to be effective . By taking these into account, I was able to adjust my approach and become more efficient in the process.
LO 2 : Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken , developing new skills
Throughout this community service activity, I faced various challenges that challenged me to evolve and learn new things. The greatest challenge was making sure each child stayed interested and understood the mathematical ideas being presented. Because the group had different levels of understanding since they were from different grades , it was hard for me to find a balance between keeping the lessons straightforward enough for some and challenging enough for others. In order to get over this, I needed to think quickly and devise other ways of assisting various learners.
The other challenge was keeping the children engaged during the session , because conventional teaching methods were prone to be dull, my friends and I had to mix in games, interactive activities, and even songs to keep things interesting. Through this experience, I learned to improve my problem-solving and adaptability skills since we needed to modify the activities when an activity was no successful .
From these challenges , I gained greater confidence in teaching, communicating, and being able to handle a group of individuals. I became more patient as well, with developing leadership skills which helped me learn teaching in a fun way while still showing them respect. By accepting these obstacles , not only did I advance my own capacities but also guaranteed a more substantial and rewarding learning experience for the children.
LO 3 : Initiate and plan a CAS experience

Conducting six successful sessions across three weekends required planning and coordination. From the beginning, I and my friends needed to collaborate in ensuring each session was well coordinated in a manner that made the activities informative as well as entertaining. We divided the workload, where some worked on lesson material development, and others created interactive games to practice mathematical concepts.
Part of the planning involved comprehending the learning requirements of the students and creating activities that would maintain their interest. We improvised every session to make it interesting . Additionally we had responsibilities of managing time and having all the required resources.
This experience allowed me to develop my self management skills , conduct interactive sessions and solve problems ahead of time . Ultimately all of this helped in making community service enjoyable and effective .
LO 4 : Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience
Every session of this community service required , consistency, and determination. Although Teaching mathematics to poor children was a rewarding experience, it came with challenges. Some of the children had difficulty focusing , while others needed special attention to understand some concepts. In spite of these challenges, I was determined to make sure that each child had a good learning experience.
There were times when activities and sessions didn’t go as planned, and I had to modify them on the spot I learned from such experiences and stayed motivated throughout , which required persistence , especially because I had to manage my academics throughout the community service.
By being there each session , being an active participant, and always looking for ways to better teach, I showed persistence in making a difference. Ultimately, watching the students progress and enthusiasm made all the frustration worthwhile.
LO 5 : Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively

At the beginning of our community service experience, team coordination was challenging. Having several friends on the teaching side, we were initially struggling to plan lessons well since our responsibility and roles were not well specified. This issue impacted the entire flow of our sessions and made it more difficult to maintain students’ interest.
Yet, along the way, we understood that there is strength in planned processes and collaboration. Through communication and experimentation, we created an efficient system whereby we could assign work, aid each other, and maximize our modes of teaching. This helped refine my skill for working with other people, honing my skills in communication, leadership, and problem-solving.
Through effective collaboration, we were able to enhance our productivity and make sure that our abbreviated teaching calendar was still effective. Collaborating together not only made the process easier but also made us believe more in the importance of teamwork in accomplishing common objectives.
LO 6 : Engagement with issues of global significance
The absence of interesting and good-quality education is a major global issue , particularly for kids from economically poor backgrounds. Most are stuck using memorization by rote instead of learning concepts, which limits them to thinking critically and developing varied skills. The purpose of this experience was to make math enjoyable and interactive to encourage these students to go beyond the usual methods. By integrating activities that promoted mental and physical involvement, I was able to give them a more stimulating learning experience. This experience changed my perspective for the value of quality education and made me realise that learning should challenge and motivate students and not merely demand memorization.
LO 7 : Recognize and consider the ethics of chocies and actions
During these six sessions , moral values were integral in making it possible for each child, whether learning or not, to get involved and derive something from the experience. Since I was the educator, my duty was to make all my students meaningfully engaged and not make light of the experience.I also made sure I respected them and not said anything that could hurt them . Their time and effort were within my control, which meant that I had to be flexible with the way I taught to ensure no one would be left behind. Some students required additional support, so I needed to get inventive and find ways to include all of them.Apart from academics, respecting individuals’ boundaries and ensuring voluntary participation was also crucial. Me and my friends created a safe environment for all the kids to make sure they feel safe . This experience improved my leadership and sense of responsibility in social settings.
Conclusion
Volunteering for this community service was a rewarding experience. Contributing to this education program helped me gain advanced communication skills and social competence while contributing directly to the students I assisted. The students learned various mathematical concepts in three weeks of a fun interactive learning session. Throughout my IB learner experience I exhibited the characteristics of Communicator and Open-Mindedness since I was able to adjust to new circumstances while dealing with students of varying cultural backgrounds. The project was successfully completed because it facilitated my growth as well as the students’ academic development.
