CAS Blog 3 – Band Guitar Performance: Creativity

LO1: Identifying My Strengths and Areas for Growth

One of the most memorable artistic experiences of my life was performing as the guitarist in my school’s farewell band. I have always loved music, but performing live on stage challenged me to look at it from a new perspective. I realized that while I possess a strong sense of rhythm and coordination, I lacked confidence in my stage presence. Standing before a large audience taught me how to handle nervousness and express myself more openly. This self-awareness helped me see that technical skill alone is not enough , true performance involves emotional connection and confidence.

LO2: Demonstrating That Challenges Have Been Undertaken and New Skills Developed

Preparing for the live performance helped me develop new technical and musical skills. I learned how to synchronize my guitar with vocals and other instruments to ensure harmony within the group. It was my first time performing in a band setting, so I had to adapt to cues, maintain timing, and listen attentively to others. These experiences enhanced my musical precision and deepened my understanding of how teamwork transforms individual sounds into a cohesive melody.

LO3: Initiating and Planning Activities

As part of the band, I was involved in organizing practice sessions and ensuring that everyone was on the same page. This required coordination, planning, and leadership. We had to select songs, divide roles, and schedule rehearsals that fit everyone’s availability. Managing these details taught me the importance of structure and preparation in any collaborative artistic process. The sense of shared responsibility made the final performance even more rewarding.

LO4: Showing Commitment and Perseverance

Balancing rehearsals with academics was not easy. There were times when fatigue and workload made it tempting to skip practice. However, I learned to remain committed and disciplined, reminding myself of our shared goal, to give our audience a memorable performance. This perseverance helped me build a stronger sense of responsibility and time management, which are valuable both within and beyond music.

LO5: Working Collaboratively with Others

Performing in a band highlighted how essential teamwork and trust are in any creative pursuit. Every member , from the vocalist to the drummer ,had an equally important role in shaping our sound. We learned to listen to one another, offer feedback, and adjust our parts to make the performance more balanced. Through this, I developed a deep appreciation for collective harmony, both musically and interpersonally.

LO6: Engagement with Global Issues

Our experience also made me realize how music transcends boundaries and brings people together. Music promotes emotional well-being, unity, and shared cultural expression, aligning with SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being. Performing at the farewell event allowed us to celebrate memories and friendships while spreading joy, a reminder that music is a universal language that fosters peace and connection among diverse audiences.

LO7: Considering the Ethics of Choices and Actions

We also reflected on the ethics behind our performance, ensuring that our song choices and lyrics were inclusive, respectful, and positive. We wanted our music to uplift, not offend, and to represent values of kindness and unity. This made me more conscious of how art can influence emotions and attitudes, reinforcing the idea that creativity carries responsibility
