I recently had the opportunity to participate in a rural immersion trip to Dang — a place I had heard of but never truly imagined visiting. The experience opened my eyes to a completely different lifestyle and gave me a deeper understanding of the daily challenges faced by people living in rural communities. We explored farms, visited a local hospital, toured a milk processing unit, and spent time interacting with the villagers. Every visit offered new insights and left me with meaningful reflections.
LO1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
Throughout the trip, I realized that one of my strengths is being observant and attentive to my surroundings. I made a conscious effort to stay engaged, listening carefully to farmers describing their work and observing the limited resources in the hospital. However, I also recognized that I tend to be hesitant when it comes to initiating conversations or asking questions in unfamiliar environments. Moving forward, I want to become more confident in expressing curiosity and engaging with people directly, as it’s a valuable skill for deeper learning.
LO2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills
Adjusting to life in a rural setting came with its share of challenges. The simpler living conditions and unfamiliar routines took some time to get used to, but they taught me to be more adaptable and patient. I also gained new knowledge about sustainable farming practices and rural entrepreneurship, particularly from observing the milk factory’s operations. One of the most memorable parts of the trip was trying my hand at tribal art. Even though I don’t usually consider myself artistic, learning the traditional techniques and practicing with others helped me develop creativity and an appreciation for local craftsmanship.
LO4 – Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experienc
There were moments during the trip when fatigue set in — long walks in the heat or early morning farm visits could be exhausting. Despite that, I stayed fully engaged and motivated to participate in every activity. Whether it was community interactions, cultural sessions, or evening art workshops, I made sure to contribute actively. My consistent involvement helped me get the most out of the experience and strengthened my sense of commitment.
LO5 – Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaborativel
The art sessions were a highlight in terms of collaboration. Working together as a group required patience, communication, and compromise. At times, our creative ideas didn’t align perfectly, but we learned to listen to each other and find common ground. In the end, we completed our paintings successfully and were proud of our teamwork. This experience reinforced how collaboration not only makes tasks easier but also enhances creativity and learning.
LO6 – Engagement with issues of global significance
The trip helped me connect local experiences to global concerns like sustainability and equal access to education. On the farms, I saw how natural farming methods were practiced both as a necessity and as a way to protect the environment. Conversations with local children highlighted how difficult it can be for them to attend school regularly due to distance or family responsibilities. Witnessing these realities made global issues feel personal and emphasized how interconnected these challenges are across the world.
LO7 – Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
Visiting Dang encouraged me to reflect on inequality between urban and rural areas. It made me realize how easily those of us in cities take access to education, healthcare, and infrastructure for granted. This experience reminded me of the ethical importance of empathy and social responsibility. I understood that ethical choices aren’t limited to large-scale decisions—they also lie in everyday actions, such as advocating for fairness, supporting inclusive development, and showing respect toward all communities.
