For this CAS experience, I participated in a Plastic Pollution Awareness Campaign aimed at educating people about the harmful effects of plastic waste on the environment. Our team focused on creating awareness through social media, using informative videos and digital posters to reach a wider audience. The campaign highlighted the importance of reducing single-use plastics and encouraged sustainable practices like reusing and recycling.
Learning Outcome 1 – Identify own strengths and areas for growth:
Through this activity, I recognized my strength in communication and creativity. I was able to design visually appealing posters and contribute to the scripting and editing of the awareness video. However, I noticed that I needed to improve my time management and coordination skills when working in a team setting, especially when handling multiple digital tasks and deadlines.
Learning Outcome 2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills:
This project challenged me to learn social media marketing techniques such as audience targeting and post engagement strategies. It was my first time using design tools like Canva and editing software to create impactful visuals. Overcoming technical difficulties and ensuring that our message was both informative and engaging helped me develop digital literacy and team collaboration skills.
Learning Outcome 3 – Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience:
Our team planned the campaign by setting clear objectives, defining our target audience, and creating a posting schedule. I took part in brainstorming video ideas, scripting, and visual design. The planning process helped me understand the importance of organization, coordination, and clear communication for achieving meaningful outcomes.
Learning Outcome 4 – Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences:
The campaign required consistent effort over several weeks. We had to regularly post updates, monitor engagement, and respond to feedback. Staying committed despite schoolwork and time constraints taught me discipline and perseverance, as maintaining consistency was key to keeping the audience engaged.
Learning Outcome 5 – Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively:
Working as a team allowed us to combine our individual strengths—some focused on writing content, others on editing or design. Collaboration helped us share ideas and solve problems more efficiently. I learned how teamwork can enhance creativity and how supporting each other leads to a stronger final product.
Learning Outcome 6 – Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance:
Plastic pollution is a global environmental issue that affects oceans, wildlife, and human health. By raising awareness online, we contributed to the global movement for sustainability. This experience helped me realize the power of digital platforms in promoting positive change and made me more conscious of my own environmental responsibility.
Learning Outcome 7 – Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions:
Throughout the project, we made sure our content was accurate, respectful, and ethically responsible. We avoided using exaggerated facts or negative imagery that could mislead viewers. This experience made me understand how important it is to handle global issues ethically and sensitively, especially when spreading information on social media.
Reflection:
Overall, this CAS experience allowed me to apply creativity and teamwork to raise awareness about an important global issue. It made me more conscious of my own plastic consumption and motivated me to continue promoting sustainable practices in my community.
