Creative Mela- Creativity

Creative Mela was an event hosted for the primary years in school. I was a volunteer at the creative mela, which took place in school for the younger students. I got the opportunity to express my creativity, so my peer and I took two workshops on making fridge magnets.

Learning Outcome 1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
Through this event, I recognized my strength in crafting and creativity. I found that I could effectively demonstrate the steps to make fridge magnets and simplify instructions for young children. However, I also realized an area for growth in managing a large group of energetic kids. At times, keeping their attention was challenging, and I learned that I need to work on my classroom management and communication skills to better engage younger audiences in future teaching scenarios.

Learning Outcome 2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
Teaching craft to young children presented several challenges, including adapting to their varying skill levels and managing limited attention spans. I had to think on my feet, simplifying tasks and offering additional support where needed. This experience helped me develop patience and adaptability. I also learned new skills in guiding group activities, using creative methods to explain ideas, and maintaining a fun yet productive environment. Overcoming these challenges contributed to my confidence in leadership and teaching roles.

Learning Outcome 3: Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience
Planning the fridge magnet activity involved selecting suitable materials, preparing samples, and ensuring we had enough supplies for all participants. My peer and I collaboratively designed the workshop flow, from demonstrating the craft to assisting the kids individually. This required effective time management, clear role distribution, and anticipating potential challenges, such as ensuring safety with craft tools. Taking the lead in this planning process enhanced my organizational and project management skills.

Learning Outcome 4: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences
During the Creative Mela, maintaining enthusiasm and patience with the children required consistent effort. Some kids needed more guidance and encouragement than others, which at times tested my resilience. Despite these challenges, I remained committed to ensuring that every child felt included and accomplished by the end of the session. My perseverance was reflected in the joy and pride the kids showed when they completed their fridge magnets, reinforcing the importance of dedication in achieving meaningful outcomes.

Learning Outcome 5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
Working alongside my peer was a vital part of this experience. We divided responsibilities effectively, with one of us leading demonstrations while the other provided hands-on support to the kids. Communication and collaboration were essential, as we had to adapt to the children’s needs and support each other throughout the session. This teamwork not only made the workshop run smoothly but also highlighted how collaboration can enhance both productivity and the overall experience for the participants.

Overall, the Creative Mela was a valuable experience that allowed me to identify my strengths and areas for growth, take on challenges and develop new skills, plan and lead a creative workshop, demonstrate perseverance, and collaborate effectively with my peer. This experience strengthened my teaching abilities, enhanced my teamwork skills, and reinforced the importance of patience and adaptability when working with young children.
