The Garba Fest was one of the most vibrant and energetic events of the year, providing a chance to celebrate the spirit of Navratri through traditional dance and music. For me, this experience was not just fun; it was a meaningful opportunity for personal growth, challenging myself, and experiencing the benefits of teamwork.
LO1: Identifying Strengths and Growth Areas
Though I enjoy casual dancing, I’ve never had formal Garba training, making this event a slight step out of my comfort zone. My strength quickly emerged in my ability to pick up rhythms and adapt to group movements. However, I also clearly identified areas for growth, particularly in coordinating my hand and foot movements for the more intricate steps. This realization has shown me that with more focused practice and increased confidence, I can successfully take on more technically challenging dance forms in the future.
LO2: Undertaking Challenges and Developing New Skills
Learning the Garba steps was a significant challenge. Initially, keeping the different step sequences like 22, 14, 6, and dakla beats straight was confusing. Unlike freestyle, Garba demands synchronization and stamina. To overcome this, I observed my friends and peers diligently. This allowed me to understand helped me master each sequence, and I felt a genuine sense of achievement when I was finally able to keep pace with the group during the faster segments of the dance.
LO5: Demonstrating Collaborative Skills
The Garba Fest was fundamentally a collaborative effort. From synchronizing our moves in the circles to cheering each other on and helping peers who struggled with the steps, the event emphasized the power of community. It reinforced for me that learning is easier and much more enjoyable when shared. The collective, unified energy of everyone dancing in sync was incredibly motivating and contributed to a joyful experience.
Ultimately, the Garba Fest was a powerful cultural event and a chance for genuine personal development. Not only did I enhance my coordination and endurance, but I also realized that I genuinely love pushing outside my comfort zone. While maintaining the rapid, structured rhythm was difficult at first, it was a practical lesson in patience and persistence. The sense of belonging dancing with peers, assisting one another, and celebrating small victories together highlighted the immense value of collaboration. I left the event with stronger bonds, new skills, and a greater appreciation for the beauty and rigor of traditional dance styles like Garba.
