From October 14th to 18th, our school organized the 6th edition of the Football National Selection Tournament, hosting student-athletes from schools all throughout the country. I served as a volunteer on the escorting team, which mainly required me to guide participants, answer questions, and ensure they felt comfortable. This position required a great deal of patience, quick thinking, and strong communication skills, as I was working with many different students while trying to keep the tournament running as smoothly as possible.
Facing Challenges and Learning New Skills
One of the biggest challenges was making sure participants knew where to go and when. Many students weren’t familiar with the school, meaning I needed to give students accurate directions, keep track of the running schedule, and account for any delays or unexpected issues, which meant I often needed to problem solve on the spot.
Another challenge was working with multiple personalities. Some players would be very vocal and request help immediately, while others were timid and hesitant to speak up. Supporting a diverse group was an opportunity to think critically about communication and flexibility, as I adjusted my approach to each scenario. I learned that small tweaks, such as increased approachability or patience, helped students feel supported.
Staying Committed
The tournament lasted for a five-day period, and while it was draining to guide teams, answer questions, and adjust to last-minute changes at times, within every day, there was overwhelming days, especially when tons of assistance was needed at once.
Nevertheless, I put my foot down as I had made a commitment, and I believed the success of this tournament depended on my commitment. I could’ve easily taken a step back every day, yet I craved staying true to this responsibility I had adopted and agreed upon. Ultimately and simply, committing regularly allowed me to appreciate the importance of perseverance in commitment.
Working with Others
I also learned the importance of teamwork during this experience. I was working with a group of volunteers and because of that, we consistently had to coordinate, delegate, and talk to one another to ensure that no base was completely unattended. Working as a team helped everything run much more smoothly.
At the same time, I interacted with students from a number of different schools, which provided me with a great deal of perspective. Each team worked in its own way and it was fascinating to see so many different styles and backgrounds at play. Staying open-minded and respectful was crucial in these interactions.
Ethics and Responsibilities
Since I was representing the school, I needed to be conscious of my behavior. It was important to treat all competitors fairly and equally, no matter what school they came from. I made sure to give everyone the same level of attention and respect.
There were times players were upset because of referees or the schedule or any other number of things. In those times, I needed to remain calm, listen to what they were saying, and helped them without taking any sides. I learned the importance of being a person of integrity because even the smallest of factors, such as patience and respect changed the way people experienced an experience.
Takeaways
In conclusion, participating in this tournament assisted in my development of time management, flexibility, teamwork, and communication. More significantly, I learned how important ethics and accountability are when working in leadership or service positions.
The tournament was not only about a football experience – it was about connecting people, and I am delighted to have the opportunity to contribute to something that created such a memorable experience for many students and fostered a sense of community.
