I invested around 3 hours each day for 3 weekends to teach art to groups of children from various schools. Me and my group members planned different agendas on different days of the service. As a group we pushed them and helped them grow as they learned to express themselves freely which is an essential skill required in the art sector.
LO 2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills:
To embark upon there were various types of challenges faced by me and my group members such as the language barrier. A few of our group members were not so fluent speaking in gujarati hence were unable to communicate effectively however the use of hand gestures and efficient body language helped the children to comprehend and understand the instructions without any major complications. Another such challenge was the safety of children. As students of FS we have learned the art of critical thinking through various activities , experiences and life classes which helped us solve issues that occurred on the spot without any wastage of time. We had also divided the students into small groups led by each group member which made our task simpler and made sure each child got sufficient and undivided attention in order to also help them learn faster and better.
LO 3: Initiate and plan a CAS experience:
I was also involved in the planning and initiation of this experience. My group members and I had conducted several meetings priorly which consisted of us planning such as deciding the art we would teach them on different days and the data was added in the sheet by the leader for our reference, dividing roles amongst us , how we would split the children , etc.
LO4: Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience:
Perseverance and commitment played vital roles in this CAS experience. This community service was three weeks long , all the volunteers including me and my group members had to wake up early in the morning and come to school on weekends / holidays. Teaching the kids at such early hours for such a long time required a great deal of dedication and was a clear indication of our desire to support the community. Additionally, we had to devote a significant amount of our spare time to organising the event so that the kids could enjoy it to the fullest. We evaluated what worked and what could have been improved based on our experiences in the first few days.
LO 5: Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively:
My team members and I had to make several decisions both during the service and even before. While planning there were several opinions presented by the group members which led to disagreement at certain points too however with teamwork and collaboration we came to a common ground ensuring not to be unfair towards any member or discriminate in any form allowing them to showcase and apply their skills to the fullest. Since we had to teach the kids as a team, we were able to display our ability to collaborate effectively. We all communicated a lot with one another, demonstrating excellent social skills. Working together had numerous advantages as well since it allowed us to focus on a smaller and more manageable workload, which improved the level of feedback and attention we could provide to each child.
LO6: Engagement with issues of global significance:
While teaching art to children in my community, I realized how arts education contributes to the global goal of providing inclusive, quality education. In many places around the world, creative subjects are often neglected, so giving students a space to express themselves not only supported their well-being but also connected my local action to the wider issue of educational inequality.
