Shor the Band

For my CAS project, I collaborated with a few friends from school to form a band. What began as a fun initiative to perform at internal school events—such as Global OdysseyLit Fest, and school night-outs—eventually grew into something larger. Our band started getting invited to perform at external events and local cafés, which gave us a chance not only to share our passion for music with a wider audience but also to begin earning from our performances. This journey combined creativity, collaboration, and perseverance, while giving me invaluable lessons in personal growth and responsibility.

Learning Outcomes Demonstrated:

LO1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth:
Through this project, I identified my strength in performing confidently before an audience and in contributing creatively to music selection and arrangement. I also noticed that I could adapt well during live performances when unexpected issues arose. However, I recognized areas for growth, such as refining my technical musical skills, improving consistency during long sets, and learning how to balance showmanship with precision.

LO2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills:
Forming a band came with several challenges—coordinating different schedules, overcoming stage anxiety, managing technical equipment, and meeting the expectations of live audiences. Each performance pushed me to develop new skills, such as managing nerves, adjusting to sound system issues on the spot, and engaging with diverse audiences. These challenges made me more resilient and resourceful, while also strengthening my musical abilities.

LO3 – Initiate and plan a CAS experience:
Starting a band required initiative, vision, and planning. From selecting members with complementary skills to choosing songs and organizing rehearsals, I actively participated in shaping the direction of the group. When external opportunities arose, I was also involved in handling logistics, such as setting up equipment, coordinating timings with event organizers, and ensuring our setlist was well-prepared. This planning experience taught me the importance of leadership and structured organization in bringing a creative idea to life.

LO4 – Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience:
Sustaining the band over time required consistent effort and dedication. There were moments when rehearsals became tiring, conflicts arose, or external commitments made scheduling difficult. However, I stayed committed to both the practice sessions and the performances, understanding that perseverance was key to improvement. Our growth as a band reflected the continuous dedication of every member, and this persistence ultimately enabled us to succeed both within and outside of school.

LO5 – Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively:
Collaboration was at the core of this project. Every performance depended on synchronization, listening to one another, and trusting each person to play their part. Working in a band taught me how to value the contributions of others, compromise on creative decisions, and resolve conflicts constructively. The collaborative spirit not only improved our music but also built lasting friendships and a sense of shared achievement.

LO6 – Engagement with issues of global significance:
Music is a universal language, and through our performances, we engaged with the idea of cultural exchange and community bonding. Some of our song choices reflected global themes, while our participation in public events helped us contribute to community entertainment and well-being. By performing at cafés and local venues, I realized how art can play a role in connecting people across backgrounds and cultures, which ties into the broader significance of cultural expression in society.

LO7 – Recognise and consider the ethics of choices and actions:
As our band began to earn money from external performances, we had to consider the ethical aspects of dividing earnings fairly, acknowledging contributions, and maintaining professionalism. We also had to make responsible choices about the type of songs we performed, ensuring that they were appropriate for the audience and respectful of the context. These decisions highlighted the importance of ethics in both creative and financial aspects of teamwork.

Reflection:

Starting and sustaining a band has been one of the most rewarding CAS experiences I have undertaken. It combined creativity with responsibility and gave me a platform to grow personally, musically, and socially. While the recognition and earnings were gratifying, the true value lay in the journey—the hours of practice, the excitement of live performances, and the bond formed with my bandmates. This project taught me perseverance, humility, and the power of collaboration. More importantly, it showed me how passion, when pursued with commitment, can create impact both within a community and beyond.
