Pi Day – Creativity

The Pi day is an important annual event that is used to commemorate the mathematical number p (pi) on the 14th of March of each year (3/14) as the date resembles the first three digits of pi. The honors of being part of a Pi Day event in the set up of a math booth with innovative challenges and difficult problems to solve as an interactive event were an honor. The event was a huge success when overlapped with education experience and fun and thus served to unite the participants of different math abilities.

LO1 : Identifying Strengths and Areas for Growth

The development of the Pi Day booth demanded that skills of problem-solving and new think tanks should be created. The task to create some kind of nonsensical math questions made me think out of the box and present the mathematical concepts in a funny and interesting form in an efficient manner. The experience also led to the development of the skill to deliver complicated concepts to a mixed audience.

LO2: Taking on Challenges & Developing New Skills

Planning and organization of the stall involved commitment and constant willingness to work. The assignment of coming up with questions not too tricky and yet attainable coupled with the triumphant performance on the day was demanding and satisfying. It was also the case of situations where questions had to be rewritten and that involved being fierce in ensuring that the experience remained hard and educational to the competitors.

LO4: Perseverance & Commitment

Collaboration was at the center of successful operation of the stall. We shared tasks effectively through the collaboration with other students thereby ensuring a smooth set up, question development and communication with interviewees. Not only was this teamwork more enjoyable, but it also facilitated the sharing of ideas hence making the event interesting and dynamic so that it would attract students with varied mathematical background.

LO5 : Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively

Pi Day was a special occasion that allowed reaching students of varying math skills. Having personal contact with participants and being engaged in the process of solving mathematical problems in groups, we managed to establish the feeling of unity and interest in the topic. We were actually able to promote an interactive dynamic process of learning math and thus we were able to make the experience exciting to participants of all levels.

In conclusion, the Pi Day celebration was a motivating event that made me appreciate the importance of creativity, determination, perseverance, and collaboration in the community. It also made me believe that math may be considered enjoyable and entertaining when studied in terms of creative strategies. Although, the celebrations of next year are looking forward to, it is even more with expectations that I will be able to explore new ideas and even have more passion on mathematics to all those involved!
