For three weekends and six engaging sessions, my friends and I had the incredible opportunity to teach art to underprivileged children through interactive activities and creative workshops. What started as a simple initiative to help them improve their artistic skills quickly turned into a meaningful experience filled with learning, laughter, and connection. By incorporating fun challenges and creative tasks, we aimed to make art easier and more enjoyable. This experience not only allowed us to give back to the community but also helped us grow in patience, communication, and teamwork. Through each session, we witnessed the children’s enthusiasm and progress, reinforcing the true impact of education when made accessible and engaging.
LO 1 : Identify own strength and develop areas for growth

Through this community service, I was able to learn more about my strengths and weaknesses. One of my greatest strengths was that I was able to communicate and interact with the children effectively. I discovered that if I made art more interactive and fun, I was able to keep them engaged and make things simpler for them to learn. My confidence in leading activities and breaking down artistic concepts also grew throughout the duration of the six sessions.
At the same time, I identified areas where I needed to work on. I could vary teaching methods to suit different learning abilities. Some of the children were quick to grasp painting and craft skills, while others needed more individual attention. This challenged me to be patient and creative in presenting activities in different formats. I also learned the importance of planning each session beforehand for it to be effective. By taking these into account, I was able to adjust my approach and become more efficient in the process.
LO 2 : Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills
Throughout this community service activity, I faced various challenges that pushed me to evolve and learn new things. The greatest challenge was making sure each child stayed interested and understood the artistic techniques being presented. Because the group had different levels of skill since they were from different grades, it was hard for me to find a balance between keeping the activities simple enough for some and challenging enough for others. In order to get over this, I needed to think quickly and devise other ways of assisting various learners.
The other challenge was keeping the children engaged during the session. Because conventional teaching methods could be repetitive, my friends and I had to mix in games, interactive craft activities, and even collaborative art projects to keep things interesting. Through this experience, I learned to improve my problem-solving and adaptability skills since we needed to modify the activities whenever one was unsuccessful.
From these challenges, I gained greater confidence in teaching, communicating, and being able to handle a group of individuals. I became more patient as well, while developing leadership skills that helped me teach in a fun and respectful way. By accepting these obstacles, not only did I advance my own capacities but also guaranteed a more substantial and rewarding learning experience for the children.
LO 3 : Initiate and plan a CAS experience
Conducting six successful sessions across three weekends required planning and coordination. From the beginning, my friends and I needed to collaborate to ensure each session was well coordinated in a manner that made the activities both informative and entertaining. We divided the workload, where some worked on lesson material development, and others created art-based games and craft projects to practice creative skills.
Part of the planning involved understanding the learning requirements of the students and creating activities that would maintain their interest. We improvised every session to make it engaging. Additionally, we had responsibilities of managing time and having all the required resources such as paints, brushes, and craft supplies.
This experience allowed me to develop my self-management skills, conduct interactive sessions, and solve problems ahead of time. Ultimately, all of this helped in making community service enjoyable and effective.
LO 4 : Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience
Every session of this community service required consistency and determination. Although teaching art to underprivileged children was a rewarding experience, it came with challenges. Some of the children had difficulty focusing, while others needed special attention to complete their work. In spite of these challenges, I was determined to make sure that each child had a good learning experience.
There were times when activities and sessions didn’t go as planned, and I had to modify them on the spot. I learned from such experiences and stayed motivated throughout, which required persistence, especially because I had to manage my academics alongside the community service.
By being present in each session, being an active participant, and always looking for ways to improve teaching, I showed persistence in making a difference. Ultimately, watching the students’ progress and enthusiasm made all the effort worthwhile.
LO 5 : Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaborativel
At the beginning of our community service experience, team coordination was challenging. Having several friends on the teaching side, we initially struggled to plan lessons since our responsibilities and roles were not well specified. This issue impacted the flow of our sessions and made it more difficult to maintain the students’ interest.
Yet, along the way, we understood that there is strength in planned processes and collaboration. Through communication and experimentation, we created an efficient system whereby we could assign work, help each other, and maximize our teaching methods. This helped refine my skills in working with others, honing my communication, leadership, and problem-solving abilities.
Through effective collaboration, we were able to enhance our productivity and make sure that our teaching calendar was still effective. Collaborating together not only made the process easier but also made us believe more in the importance of teamwork in accomplishing common objectives.
LO 6 : Engagement with issues of global significance

The absence of interesting and good-quality education is a major global issue, particularly for children from economically poor backgrounds. Many of them lack access to creativity-based learning, which limits their ability to think critically, solve problems, and express themselves. The purpose of this experience was to make art enjoyable and interactive to encourage these students to go beyond traditional rote learning. By integrating activities that promoted both imagination and hands-on work, I was able to give them a more stimulating learning experience. This experience changed my perspective on the value of quality education and made me realize that learning should challenge and motivate students while giving them creative freedom.
LO 7 : Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
During these six sessions, moral values were integral in making it possible for each child, regardless of their abilities, to get involved and derive something from the experience. Since I was the educator, my duty was to make all my students meaningfully engaged and ensure the experience was respectful and inclusive. I also made sure I treated them kindly and never said anything that could discourage them. Their time and effort were within my control, which meant that I had to be flexible with the way I taught to ensure no one would be left behind. Some students required additional support, so I needed to get inventive and find ways to include all of them. Apart from skill development, respecting individuals’ boundaries and ensuring voluntary participation was also crucial. My friends and I created a safe environment for all the kids to make sure they felt secure and motivated. This experience improved my leadership and sense of responsibility in social settings.
Conclusion
Volunteering for this community service was a rewarding experience. Contributing to this art education program helped me gain advanced communication skills and social competence while contributing directly to the students I assisted. The students learned various painting, drawing, and craft skills in three weeks of fun, interactive learning sessions. Throughout my IB learner experience I exhibited the characteristics of Communicator and Open-Mindedness since I was able to adjust to new circumstances while dealing with students of varying cultural backgrounds. The project was successfully completed because it facilitated my growth as well as the students’ creative development.
