Tutoring – service

Over a few weeks, I have been tutoring a classmate in biology and chemistry, and another in SAT preparation. This experience has not only supported my peers academically but also allowed me to reflect on my journey as a learner and tutor.

LO 1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for personal growth

Tutoring helped me realize that I am strong at explaining complex scientific ideas in simpler terms. However, I noticed that I sometimes lacked patience when a concept had to be revisited multiple times. This made me aware of the need to work on patience and adaptability as areas for growth. So, I started working on being patient when explaining concepts.

LO 2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process

Tutoring was challenging because both students had a different learning style. I had to adapt my approach by using diagrams, finding practice questions, and real-world examples to better fit both students and subjects. This process improved my communication skills and taught me how to think more flexibly when presenting information. It also helped improve my research skills as I had to look for material to aid in understanding.

LO 4 – Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences

Tutoring was not a one-time activity but a consistent effort. I continued meeting weekly even though I had my own deadlines and assessments. Sticking with the sessions showed commitment and perseverance, as I had to balance my own academic workload with helping others in balancing theirs.
