As part of my CAS project, I organised a Fresher’s Party for the newly joined Grade 11 students. The event was aimed at welcoming them to the IBDP community and creating a fun, comfortable space for them to interact with their peers. My role involved multiple responsibilities: I planned the script and hosted the event, designed interactive games, and contributed to the decoration of the venue. This experience was immensely rewarding and helped me grow in several areas.
LO1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
While planning the event, I discovered that I have a natural flair for public speaking and engaging an audience. Hosting the event helped me refine my communication skills and boosted my confidence. However, I also realised that I sometimes struggle with time management under pressure, especially when juggling multiple tasks like scripting, rehearsing, and game design. This experience helped me identify this as an area I need to improve, and I have started using better planning tools and time-blocking techniques as a result.
LO2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills
This event presented multiple challenges, especially when it came to designing games that would appeal to a diverse group and managing last-minute script changes. I also faced unexpected issues such as equipment delays and needing to adjust the decor setup due to space constraints. These challenges pushed me to think quickly and adapt in real-time. In the process, I developed better problem-solving and improvisational skills, both of which are crucial in event planning.
LO3 – Initiate and plan a CAS experience
This was a fully student-initiated project, and I was involved from the early stages. From brainstorming the event structure, assigning roles within the team, to designing the flow of the party. I contributed to every part of the planning process. I made detailed schedules, helped prepare a checklist, and created a run-through timeline for the event day. Seeing our ideas materialise into a successful event was deeply fulfilling.
LO4 – Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience
The days leading up to the party were intense. Despite a heavy academic workload and logistical hurdles, I stayed committed to the project. There were times when rehearsals had to be re-done or game props had to be reworked, but I remained dedicated to making the event a success. My consistent effort and passion for creating a welcoming environment paid off in the smiles and laughter of the new students.
LO5 – Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively
Organising this event was a team effort. I collaborated with fellow classmates who handled other areas like music, food, and photography. We regularly held meetings to track our progress and discuss improvements. This experience helped me appreciate the importance of listening to others’ ideas, dividing work based on strengths, and supporting each other. It taught me the value of trust and collective responsibility.
LO7 – Recognise and consider the ethics of choices and actions
Throughout the planning process, I remained mindful of the ethical implications of my decisions from the games we chose (ensuring they were respectful and appropriate), to the content of the script, and even how we allocated resources for decorations. I also made sure we were not wasteful with our materials and tried to reuse and recycle wherever possible, promoting environmental responsibility.
The Fresher’s Party project was more than just a celebration, it was a learning journey that helped me grow as a communicator, a planner, and a team player. It allowed me to step outside my comfort zone and take ownership of a major school event. I feel more prepared for future leadership roles and confident in my ability to contribute meaningfully to a community.
