As the Head of the Organizing Committee (OC) for the FSMUN (Fountainhead School Model United Nations), the experience has been one of immense personal and professional growth. Over the past months, I’ve had the unique opportunity to lead a team of highly motivated individuals, coordinate complex tasks, and organize an event that brought together students from across the region to engage in global diplomacy. Through this role, I have experienced first-hand the core principles of CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service), and I am excited to share how each of these learning outcomes has shaped my journey.
LO1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
Taking on the role of OC Head required me to reflect deeply on my strengths and areas for growth. Initially, I was unsure about my ability to manage a team and handle the logistical complexities of a large-scale event like FSMUN. However, as I began to immerse myself in the project, I realized that my skills in communication, organization, and leadership were some of my strengths. Still, I also recognized my need to improve in delegating tasks effectively and managing stress under pressure.
To address these areas of growth, I focused on refining my time management and prioritization skills, which helped me delegate tasks more efficiently. I also sought feedback from my team, ensuring we had open lines of communication. This reflective process allowed me to better understand my leadership style and adapt to challenges as they arose.
LO 2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
FSMUN presented a variety of challenges, from logistical difficulties to managing diverse team dynamics. One of the biggest hurdles was coordinating multiple departments (Logistics, Marketing, Delegate Relations) while keeping everything aligned with our vision for the conference. These challenges pushed me to develop new skills in conflict resolution, team management, and event planning.
As the event approached, the pressure intensified. Organizing guest speakers, handling last-minute changes to schedules, and ensuring that all materials were ready on time tested my adaptability. However, by staying organized and remaining calm under pressure, I was able to keep the team focused and deliver a successful event. These experiences have made me more confident in handling future challenges and adaptable to unforeseen circumstances.
LO 3: Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience
Planning FSMUN from the ground up was a massive undertaking that required careful consideration of every detail—from budgeting and venue selection to ensuring all delegates had the necessary materials. I worked closely with my team to set clear goals, timelines, and responsibilities. We established a detailed project plan that outlined each milestone and assigned tasks based on individual strengths.
By consistently checking in on progress and adjusting plans as needed, I learned how to break down a large project into manageable components. I also developed a deeper understanding of the importance of preparation and foresight. This process taught me how to initiate and execute a comprehensive plan, which is a skill I can carry forward into all future endeavors.
LO 5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
FSMUN would not have been successful without the efforts of the entire OC team. I was reminded constantly of the power of collaboration. We had team members from various backgrounds, and each brought unique perspectives and skills to the table. By embracing a collaborative approach, I learned to tap into the diverse strengths of my team members and value their input.
Throughout the planning and execution stages, we held regular team meetings to ensure everyone was on the same page. I learned how to listen actively, foster an inclusive atmosphere, and resolve conflicts in a way that ensured team cohesion. Ultimately, the success of FSMUN was a direct result of the collective effort, and I have gained a deep appreciation for the power of teamwork.
LO 6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance
FSMUN was a unique opportunity to engage with issues of global importance, from climate change and human rights to global health crises and economic inequality. As part of my role, I helped coordinate the themes and topics for the conference, ensuring they were timely and relevant to current international concerns. This allowed me to explore these issues on a deeper level and understand how global problems are interconnected.
As I interacted with delegates and watched them engage in debates, I was reminded of the importance of youth involvement in global issues. This experience deepened my understanding of international relations and inspired me to continue seeking ways to contribute positively to the world around me.
Looking back, my role as Head of the Organizing Committee for FSMUN has been a transformative experience. The learning outcomes from CAS—self-reflection, perseverance, collaboration, leadership, and ethical decision-making—have not only shaped my abilities but also my character. This experience has equipped me with the tools to approach future challenges with confidence, knowing that hard work, collaboration, and ethical choices will lead to success.
Through this journey, I have not only organized a conference but also learned invaluable life lessons that I will carry with me into my future academic and professional endeavors. FSMUN has truly been a testament to the power of service, creativity, and activity, and I am proud to have been part of such an impactful event.
