FSMUN – Creativity

Reflection:

Being on the FSMUN Decor Committee was an intense yet fulfilling experience. Our goal was to visually communicate the theme of diplomacy and global unity through decorations like country flags, fabric installations in school colors, and backdrops for speeches and photos.

  • LO1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
Initially, I felt confident with sketching design ideas but realized I lacked practical experience in large-scale installations. Through this experience, I developed spatial planning and hands-on execution skills. I also grew more comfortable taking feedback and making on-the-spot adjustments.
  • LO3 – Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience
Our team began planning over a month in advance. I took initiative to design a visual theme and created a shared digital folder with layout sketches, materials needed, and a timeline. Regular meetings and task allocation kept us on track, teaching me how to plan with intention and flexibility.
  • LO4 – Show commitment and perseverance in CAS experiences
There were moments when things didn’t go as planned—flags tore, posters fell, and time ran short. Despite the setbacks, I stayed late after school, ensuring each piece matched our vision. It showed me how perseverance directly impacts the final result.
  • LO5 – Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
The committee had students from different classes and artistic styles. By listening, compromising, and sometimes delegating tasks I initially wanted to do myself, I saw how collaboration often leads to stronger, more cohesive results.
  • LO6 – Engagement with issues of global significance
FSMUN highlights international cooperation, and our decor needed to reflect that. By researching national flags and diplomatic symbolism, I became more aware of global cultures and the visual language of unity and peace.
  • LO7 – Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
We made sustainable choices, reusing past materials and avoiding non-biodegradable decor. I also advocated for not using national flags as tablecloths or floor décor, respecting cultural sensitivities. It reminded me that creativity must align with ethical awareness.
