During our school night out, I participated in a night basketball tournament, which I counted as a CAS experience under the strand Activity. It was a unique and exciting opportunity to play the sport I enjoy in a completely different environment—under the lights and alongside friends and classmates in a more casual, yet competitive setting. The experience allowed me to challenge myself physically and mentally while enjoying the spirit of the game in a fun and engaging atmosphere.
LO 1: Identify your own strengths and develop areas for personal growth
Participating in the night basketball tournament helped me recognize some of my key strengths—such as communication, court awareness, and defensive positioning—especially in an unfamiliar setting. However, I also realized that playing late at night required greater stamina and mental focus, and I identified the need to improve my endurance and consistency throughout games. This reflection helped me better understand how changing circumstances can impact performance and where I need to grow as a player.
LO 3: Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience
Although it was a school-organized event, I took personal responsibility for selecting basketball as my activity, preparing myself physically for the games, and ensuring I had the necessary gear and hydration. I also coordinated with teammates to warm up before the match and discuss simple strategies. Planning ahead helped me make the most of the opportunity and ensured I was ready to contribute meaningfully to my team during the tournament.
LO 4: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences
Despite the calm and friendly environment of a night out, I remained committed to giving my best during the tournament. Playing late at night came with physical fatigue and lower energy levels, but I pushed through by staying mentally engaged and supporting my teammates. I stayed on court for most of the game and didn’t let the informal nature of the event affect my effort, showing perseverance and a strong sense of sportsmanship.
LO 5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
The night tournament gave me a chance to play with some teammates I hadn’t played with regularly. We had to quickly develop trust, communicate effectively, and support one another on the court. The informal and fun nature of the event made collaboration easier and more enjoyable, and it reminded me of how strong teamwork can make even impromptu matches successful and memorable.
LO 6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance
While the tournament itself was a school-level event, it reflected a larger global value—using sport as a means to promote physical and mental well-being, community building, and inclusivity. Basketball, a global sport, brought students together across different grades and backgrounds, showing how recreational activities like this contribute to holistic development and global goals related to health and well-being.
LO 7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
During the night basketball tournament, I made a conscious effort to uphold fairness and sportsmanship, even in a relaxed, informal setting. I respected the referees’ decisions, encouraged teammates, and avoided any form of unsportsmanlike conduct. There were moments when fouls or disagreements occurred, but I chose to respond calmly and prioritize the spirit of the game over winning. This experience reminded me that ethical behavior matters just as much in casual environments as it does in formal competitions.
