Pi Day

Pi Day at our school was an exciting event where we explored various mathematical and physical concepts through interactive simulations. Our stall, named Sim City 4, featured simulations of the Monty Hall problem, the Buffon’s Needle problem, and kinematics concepts like vectors and horizontal/vertical velocity through the “Tranquilize the Monkey” simulation. Our goal was to make complex theories accessible and engaging for students, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of mathematics and physics.

Learning Outcomes Achieved
LO 2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process

One of the challenges we faced was finding the simulations both educational and entertaining. To achieve this, we had to develop new strategies to engage students and ensure they grasped the underlying concepts. For example, we found simulations with visual aids and interactive elements to illustrate the Monty Hall problem and Buffon’s Needle. This experience taught me the importance of creativity and adaptability in teaching and presenting complex ideas.

LO 5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively

Working with my classmates to organize Sim City 4 was a collaborative effort. We had to coordinate our activities and ensure they complemented each other to provide a comprehensive learning experience for the students. This experience highlighted the importance of teamwork and communication in achieving common goals. Collaboration is important because it allows us to learn from others, share ideas, and achieve more together than we could alone.

LO 7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions

Throughout the planning and execution of Sim City 4, we had to consider the ethical implications of our presentations. Ensuring that the information was accurate, unbiased, and accessible to all students was crucial. We also had to make sure that all participants felt included and respected during the activities. This experience made me more mindful of the ethical considerations in educational initiatives and the importance of promoting fairness and inclusivity.

Final Takeaways
Through Pi Day and Sim City 4, I developed communication, principled, and reflective learner profile characteristics. This experience linked with my interest in mathematics and physics, and my passion for making complex concepts accessible and engaging. My participation in the event fostered community engagement and a sense of responsibility towards promoting education and understanding. The highlight was seeing the students’ enthusiasm and increased understanding of the simulations. This activity encouraged creative and critical thinking, promoting principled behavior and intellectual risk-taking. I plan to apply these learnings to future educational activities and continue advocating for making complex subjects accessible and engaging for all students.
