Rural immersion trip

For six days, our class embarked on an unforgettable journey to Killed, a picturesque village in Gujarat, where we immersed ourselves in the local way of life. This experience was not only an adventure but also a meaningful CAS experience, helping us develop key learning outcomes such as self-awareness, perseverance, collaboration, and ethical decision-making.

LO1: Identifying Strengths and Areas for Growth

One of the most impactful parts of this trip was recognizing our own strengths and areas for growth. Whether it was adapting to rural life, engaging in learning about farming, or creating traditional artwork on an old house wall, each activity challenged us in different ways. Some of us discovered a talent for artistic expression, while others realized the importance of patience and resilience in understanding agricultural practices. This self-awareness encouraged personal growth and reflection on our capabilities.

LO2: Overcoming Challenges and Developing New Skills

This trip provided numerous challenges that pushed us beyond our comfort zones. Learning about farming, for instance, required endurance and attentiveness as we observed and understood the complexities of agricultural work. Learning the intricacies of traditional art was another challenge, as it required careful precision and an understanding of cultural motifs. Additionally, experiencing a completely different lifestyle—eating in a local home, adapting to minimal resources, and adjusting to a slower pace of life—taught us valuable life skills and adaptability.

LO4: Perseverance and Commitment

A key takeaway from this trip was perseverance. Understanding farming practices under the hot sun required focus and patience, and even though we were not actively farming, we remained engaged in learning. Similarly, while painting a traditional mural required patience and detailed work, we persevered to create something meaningful. This experience reinforced the value of seeing tasks through to completion, no matter the difficulty.

LO5: Collaboration and Teamwork

One of the greatest aspects of this journey was the sense of community we built. Every activity required us to work together—whether it was observing farming techniques, cooking with locals, or painting murals. Stargazing at night also became a collective experience, where we shared knowledge, stories, and reflections. Working collaboratively strengthened our friendships and taught us the importance of cooperation and effective communication.

LO6: Engaging with Global Issues

This trip also deepened our understanding of global concerns like sustainability, food security, and cultural preservation. Learning about how local farmers depend on the land for survival highlighted the significance of sustainable agricultural practices. Additionally, engaging with traditional art made us appreciate the importance of preserving cultural heritage in an increasingly modernized world.

LO7: Ethics and Decision-Making

Throughout our stay, we became more conscious of the ethical implications of our actions. From ensuring that we respected local customs to understanding the impact of tourism on rural communities, we learned to make more responsible choices. Simple decisions—such as reducing waste, using water sparingly, and treating locals with the utmost respect—helped us recognize the ethical considerations that shape our interactions with the world.
