For our school’s annual Talent Competition, I was part of the Decor Team, which was responsible for setting up the stage, arranging props, and ensuring the overall visual theme matched the event. Although decor might seem simple, this experience helped me understand my strengths, push through challenges, and reflect on how creativity contributes to cultural expression on a larger scale.
LO1 – Identifying Strengths and Areas for Growth
Working in the décor team helped me realize that I’m good at visualizing how different elements—colors, lighting, and props—come together to create a theme. I also found that I work well in collaborative settings, especially when ideas need to be shared quickly.
At the same time, I recognized areas I need to work on, like time management and delegating tasks. I often took on too many small jobs myself because I wanted everything to look perfect. Learning to trust my team more is something I want to improve.
LO2 – Challenges Undertaken & New Skills Developed
One of the biggest challenges was working under time pressure. We had limited hours to set up everything before participants arrived, so we had to coordinate efficiently. I also struggled initially with using certain materials and tools, like measuring fabric correctly and assembling backdrops without them falling. Over time, I learned how to handle décor equipment more confidently and discovered new creative techniques, such as layering elements for depth and using simple materials to create a professional look.
LO4 – Perseverance & Commitment
The setup process took longer than expected, and there were moments when things didn’t go according to plan—like posters falling off or font prints not matching the theme. Still, I stayed committed until every detail was fixed. Even when my arms were tired from lifting and repositioning items multiple times, I kept working because I wanted the final result to reflect our team’s effort. Seeing the stage come together was rewarding and proved how important perseverance is during a CAS experience.
LO6 – Engagement with Issues of Global Significance
Decor may seem like a small aspect, but it plays an important role in representing creativity and cultural identity—something that connects people globally. Talent shows around the world use décor to communicate themes, emotions, and inclusivity. By contributing to this event, I engaged with the broader idea of how artistic expression fosters community, celebrates diversity, and creates spaces where everyone feels welcomed and inspired.
