Community Clean Up Drive – Service

I volunteered for three of the weekly school- organised community clean-up activities outside the school campus. The location was on the edge of a local river. I was shocked at the amount of garbage going into the very water body that supplied drinking water to thousands of Surat homes. Individuals who visited the river frequently as well as the nearby residents appeared unmoved by the filthiness and near-heartlessness despite knowing the effects that long-term trash can cause on the environment.Yet, even with all these challenges, I am grateful that I could play my part in transforming Surat into a cleaner and healthier city for the pedestrians and the animals.

LO4 :Show commitment and perseverance in CAS experience

Engaging in multiple cleanup drives demands dedication, perseverance, and a strong sense of responsibility. Collecting plastic waste from different wetland locations is both physically exhausting and time-intensive, yet my commitment to environmental conservation keeps me motivated. Waking up early on a Sunday, especially as an IB student, was often challenging. There were moments when I was tempted to skip the drive in favor of much-needed rest, but I reminded myself that my efforts were contributing to a meaningful cause. Rather than viewing it as a routine task, I saw it as an opportunity to make a tangible difference. During the cleanups, I focused on being thorough, ensuring that each area was fully cleared before moving forward. The experience became even more rewarding when shared with friends, transforming a demanding activity into an enjoyable and fulfilling venture.

LO6 : Engagement with issues of global significance

Plastic pollution is a critical environmental crisis that severely impacts ecosystems on a global scale, disrupting food chains, contaminating water bodies, and endangering countless species. This initiative directly tackles pollution and its adverse effects on ecological diversity by systematically removing plastic waste from wetlands and ensuring its proper recycling. Wetlands serve as essential buffers against climate change, acting as natural filters for pollutants and providing crucial habitats for various plant and animal species. Their preservation is fundamental to maintaining ecological equilibrium and supporting global sustainability efforts.Beyond simply collecting waste, this initiative also emphasizes the importance of proper recycling and reducing plastic consumption at the source. By actively participating, I not only confronted a pressing environmental issue but also played a role in spreading awareness about the long-term consequences of plastic pollution. This hands-on experience reinforced my understanding of environmental care and the collective responsibility needed to foster a cleaner, more sustainable city and the world.

LO7 : Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions

Recognizing the ethical responsibility behind decisions and actions is crucial when participating in beach and riverbank cleanup efforts. These areas are not only vital ecosystems but also shared public spaces that require collective care and accountability. Preventing pollution and environmental damage caused by human activity is a moral duty for both individuals and communities. Taking part in cleanup initiatives reflects a commitment to preserving nature and ensuring a healthier environment for future generations.

The community cleanup project has been an enriching experience, allowing me to cultivate perseverance, dedication, and a deeper understanding of global environmental issues. Through active involvement in reducing plastic pollution in wetlands and ensuring proper recycling, I have played a role in fostering a more sustainable and environmentally friendly ecosystem. This initiative has not only heightened my awareness of environmental responsibility but has also inspired me to remain committed to meaningful actions that drive positive change within my community and extend beyond it.
