In order to support cancer research and treatment, I volunteered for the Play 2 Beat Cancer Pickleball Tournament. In order to guarantee a successful turnout, my responsibilities included inviting attendees, advertising the event, and helping with pre-event preparations. I made an effort to contact possible players, gave them an explanation of the event’s goal, and urged them to participate. I also worked with the organising team to oversee logistics and make sure everything was prepared effectively prior to the event. In addition to helping a worthwhile cause that raises money and awareness for cancer patients, this experience helped me to develop important communication, teamwork, and organisational skills. Further several CAS Learning Outcomes were met by this service experience because I overcame obstacles, showed tenacity, planned ahead, worked with others, and addressed a global issue.
LO2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
Persuading people to play, particularly those who were not familiar with pickleball, was one of the challenges I encountered. I overcame this by honing my communication and persuasion skills, highlighting the significance of the cause, and enhancing the appeal of the event. This bolstered my ability to effectively engage people and gave me more confidence in public outreach.
LO3 – Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience.
I proactively contacted possible participants, worked with organisers, and helped with pre-event logistics. In order to maximise attendance and fundraising efforts, planning the participant outreach strategy required planning and time management.
LO4 – Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences.
Reaching out to participants and overseeing pre-event tasks required constant work and commitment. I showed my dedication to the cause by persevering in inviting people and making sure the event went well in spite of early rejections or a lack of responses.
LO5 – Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively.
To ensure a successful event, it was essential to work with a group of volunteers and event planners. I improved my teamwork and leadership skills by communicating with my team to assign tasks, encourage one another, and keep things coordinated.
LO6 – Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance.
The event addressed a major global health issue by raising money and awareness for cancer research and treatment. I helped support a cause that affects more than just my neighbourhood by making a contribution to this initiative.
