Photography is more than just capturing images—it’s about telling a story, preserving emotions, and creating a visual narrative. As part of my Creativity strand in CAS, I had the opportunity to photograph [Event Name], an experience that challenged me technically and creatively. Through this process, I developed new skills, faced challenges, and reflected on the ethical responsibilities of a photographer.
Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth Screen reader support enabled. (LO1)
Before this experience, I knew I had a good eye for composition and timing, particularly in capturing candid moments. However, I quickly realized that event photography required much more than just finding the right shot. Adapting to changing lighting conditions, adjusting my camera settings on the go, and working under time pressure were areas I needed to improve. This experience helped me identify these gaps and pushed me to become more versatile in my photography approach.
Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills. (LO2)
One of the biggest challenges I faced was low-light photography. Many parts of the event took place indoors, where artificial lighting was inconsistent. My initial shots were either too dark or too grainy due to high ISO settings. To overcome this, I experimented with manual mode, adjusting shutter speed and aperture to balance exposure. I also learned how to use available light creatively, such as capturing silhouettes or adjusting angles to reduce shadows.
Another challenge was capturing fast-moving subjects. Whether it was people speaking, performing, or interacting, I had to anticipate moments before they happened. This taught me the importance of pre-focusing, burst mode, and quick reflexes to ensure I didn’t miss key moments.
Initiate and plan a CAS experience. (LO3)
A well-executed photoshoot starts long before clicking the shutter. I prepared by scouting the venue, understanding the event schedule, and discussing key highlights with organizers. This allowed me to anticipate moments and position myself strategically.
I also worked closely with other photographers and team members to ensure we covered different angles and perspectives. Through this collaboration, I learned the value of teamwork and communication in event photography—sometimes, stepping back and letting someone else capture a shot leads to a more comprehensive final result.
Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience.(LO4)
Event photography requires endurance. I spent hours on my feet, constantly adjusting settings, framing shots, and ensuring every key moment was documented. At times, it was tiring, especially when dealing with unexpected lighting changes or missing a good shot. However, I remained committed, re-evaluating my approach when needed and pushing myself to stay engaged. This experience reinforced my patience, adaptability, and determination to improve my craft.
Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively. (LO5)
Photography may seem like a solo activity, but in an event setting, working with others is crucial. Whether it was discussing angles with fellow photographers, coordinating with organizers, or interacting with attendees, I realized how much teamwork contributes to a successful shoot. Feedback from others helped me refine my shots, and learning from their techniques improved my own approach. This experience reinforced the importance of shared learning and constructive criticism.
Recognise and consider the ethics of choices and actions. (LO7)
As a photographer, I had to consider the ethics of capturing and sharing images. Not everyone may feel comfortable being photographed, so I made sure to seek consent for close-up shots. I also ensured my images represented the event accurately and inclusively, avoiding selective storytelling or misrepresentation. This experience heightened my awareness of the responsibilities photographers have in shaping narratives and respecting the privacy of individuals.
