Environmental protection is a concern that every human being in the world is related to, and I was privileged to be able to make a difference in my own way through the beach cleaning activities organized by my school. These cleanups at Nanpura Navdi Ovaro and Dumas Beach were much more than litter picking; they were a personal experience of development, accountability, and social interaction. Every session reminded us that small deeds, when executed regularly and collectively, can amount to great change for the world.
LO1: Identify your own strengths and develop areas for personal growth.
Participation in these cleanups gave me a chance to observe my skills and areas I needed to improve. I observed that persistence came easily to me—I was successful in remaining encouraged even with early mornings and bad weather. Working alongside my peers also brought out my teamwork skills, as we all had to coordinate effectively. Balancing my time was a big task for me as I had these activities with my ongoing academic commitments. Through this I became more diciplined and managed my time effectively while completing all my tasks.
LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process.
Each cleanup presented its own challenges. The view from the start of the large amounts of litter felt overwhelming. I learned how to do larger tasks quickly and easily by breaking them down into smaller ones which were more completable. Sorting waste into recyclables, non-recyclables, and hazardous materials also taught me the importance of careful planning and adaptability. Over the few sessions I became more confident as I got used to it and had a skill in waste management, learning techniques that can be applied to larger environmental efforts.
LO3: Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience.
Although the drives were done by the school, I was able to contribute a lot in planning and preparation stages. I took on responsibilities like organizing supplies—ensuring we had enough garbage bags, gloves, and masks—and helping coordinate safety measures for the group. Through this I was able to get to know how the planning is done and this experience made me realize how important the preparation part is to ensure for a smooth event.
LO4: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences.
Being regular to the drives required a considerable amount of perseverance on days when I was not feeling good or was tired. The reason I continued was the difference we made was visible and meaningful. Seeing the beach gradually become cleaner with every session reinforced my belief that persistent effort, even when it feels small, can yield impactful results. This experience improved my dedication towards task no matter how the situation is.
LO5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively.
Collaborating with teachers and students showed me the true strength of teamwork. To make the work easier we had divided tasks like some focused on collecting waste while others sorted and organized materials. Good teamwork was the key to to maintaining efficiency and motivation throughout each cleanup. I also learned how much more effective and enjoyable the work is when we all are together which taught how in no time we were concluding our tasks and I developed a deeper appreciation for the collective effort required to achieve shared goals.
LO6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance.
Being a part in the cleanups made me aware about the issue of land and water pollution deeply. It connected me to the global conversation on sustainability, showing me how lazyness can harm ecosystems. These drives made me aware of how small actions can make an big impact. I realized that local actions contribute to global solutions, and that change begins with small, conscious efforts.
LO7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions.
Seeing the waste left behind by the people visiting the place made me realize about my own choices—like the use of single-use plastics—and how they impact the planet. This experience improved my understanding about how small decisions end up being big ones and now I actively try to reduce my environmental footprint and encourage others to do the same.
Conclusion
Overall the cleaning drives were way better than I had thought and they became a catalyst for personal growth, skill-building, and a deeper understanding of environmental responsibility. From these cleans I learned about teamwork, discipline, and awareness. And I am determined to keep contributing to causes that help protect and sustain our planet.
