I took up Ultimate Frisbee as my HDP sport to learn and practice over the course of a year. I chose this sport because it demands agility, precision, quick decision-making, and strong communication. Ultimate Frisbee is a dynamic, fast-paced field sport that combines continuous movement with strategic throwing and catching techniques. It emphasises spatial awareness, teamwork, stamina, and mental focus.
Even though it is a team-based sport, individual skill development—such as accurate throws, defensive marking, and quick transitions—plays a crucial role in overall performance. Over the past ten months, learning and participating in Frisbee has helped me strengthen both technical abilities, like forehand and backhand throws, and personal qualities like collaboration, discipline, and adaptability. This journey has aligned closely with the CAS outcomes and has shaped me into a more reflective, committed, and open-minded athlete.
Learning Outcome 1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth (Reflective & Self-Aware)
Engaging in Ultimate Frisbee allowed me to identify my natural strengths as well as areas that required development. I discovered that I have strong hand-eye coordination, quick sprinting ability, and good spatial judgment, which helped me in both offense and defense. However, I also realized that I needed to improve my throwing control—especially long-distance passes—and my stamina during continuous play.
Through regular drills, feedback from coaches, and self-reflection, I set specific goals to enhance these skills. Tracking my progress over time helped me stay focused and motivated. This process made me more reflective and self-aware, encouraging me to take responsibility for my growth and build a more balanced set of athletic abilities.
Learning Outcome 2 – Personal and Social Development (Risk-Taker, Communicator, Balanced)
Participating in Ultimate Frisbee matches was a major personal challenge that pushed me outside my comfort zone. Competing against my friends teams with varying play styles required me to adapt quickly, think strategically, and maintain composure under pressure.
Training for the matches involved intense conditioning, tactical drills, and scrimmage sessions, all of which tested my discipline and time-management skills—especially while balancing academics. On the field, I had to be a clear communicator, coordinating plays, calling out defensive strategies, and responding to rapid game transitions.
The sport also helped me grow socially. Interacting with players from other schools and collaborating with my own teammates taught me the importance of sportsmanship, respect, and open-mindedness. These experiences strengthened my interpersonal confidence and helped me appreciate different communication and leadership styles.
Learning Outcome 4 – Show perseverance and commitment (Principled & Resilient)
Throughout my involvement in Ultimate Frisbee, I consistently demonstrated perseverance by attending training sessions regularly, even when sessions were physically demanding or when academic workload increased. There were times when fatigue or setbacks—like missed catches or inaccurate throws—made improvement seem slow, but I remained committed to developing my skills.
Setting personal targets, such as improving my sprint speed or mastering a stable forehand throw, helped me stay motivated. Over time, this commitment built resilience and discipline. My continued effort not only made me a better athlete but also reinforced the value of consistency and determination in achieving meaningful goals.
Learning Outcome 5 – Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively (Communicator, Caring, Team Player)
Ultimate Frisbee is a sport driven by teamwork, and participating in it strengthened my collaborative abilities significantly. Every point scored depends on coordinated movement, trust, and understanding between players.
Throughout the year, I learned to communicate more effectively—whether by calling plays, signaling passes, or offering constructive feedback during practice. I also developed strong listening skills, ensuring I understood my teammates’ perspectives and strategies. This created a supportive and inclusive environment where everyone felt valued.
When faced with challenges such as defensive mismatches or tight game situations, we worked together to find solutions and adjust tactics. Sharing responsibility within the team helped build mutual respect and strengthened our overall performance. This experience taught me the importance of empathy, cooperation, and collective problem-solving in achieving shared success.

Overall, my year-long engagement with Ultimate Frisbee has been a transformative CAS experience that strengthened my athletic skills, personal discipline, and collaborative abilities. Through regular training, competitive matches, and continuous self-reflection, I identified my strengths, worked on my areas for growth, and developed resilience and commitment. The sport challenged me physically and mentally, pushing me to communicate better, adapt quickly, and support my teammates in high-pressure moments. Most importantly, Frisbee helped me grow as a balanced and open-minded learner, demonstrating how teamwork, perseverance, and self-awareness can lead to meaningful personal development both on and off the field.
