For this CAS experience, I organized a basketball fundraising tournament to support a local NGO that provides education and healthcare services to underprivileged children. The primary objective was to combine physical activity with community service by using basketball as a means to raise funds and awareness for a social cause. All the proceeds collected from the event were donated entirely to the NGO.
Planning and Implementation
The planning process involved obtaining permission from the school administration, booking the basketball court, promoting the event, collecting team registrations, arranging referees, and coordinating volunteers. I also managed the tournament schedule, ensured the availability of equipment, and supervised the collection of funds.
Throughout the process, I encountered several challenges, including limited participation at the beginning and scheduling conflicts. I overcame these by improving communication, encouraging more students to participate, and adjusting the event timeline. This required consistent effort, adaptability, and teamwork.
Learning Outcomes (LOs)
- LO1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
I identified leadership, communication, and organization as my key strengths. However, I recognized the need to improve time management and delegation to handle multiple responsibilities more effectively. - LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
Managing logistics, finances, and coordination under time constraints was challenging. I developed new skills in budgeting, event management, and decision-making. - LO3: Initiate and plan a CAS experience
I took the initiative to conceptualize, plan, and implement the entire event. This included designing the event structure, coordinating resources, and ensuring that the final donation process was transparent. - LO4: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences
Despite initial difficulties, I remained dedicated to completing the event successfully. I consistently followed up with participants, volunteers, and the NGO to ensure all aspects were completed properly. - LO5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
Collaboration with volunteers, players, and referees was essential for the success of the event. I learned the importance of teamwork, trust, and clear communication when working towards a common goal. - LO6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance
By raising funds for children’s education and healthcare, this project aligned with global issues such as inequality and access to quality education (UN SDG 4) and good health and well-being (UN SDG 3). - LO7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
Ethical decision-making was prioritized throughout the event. I ensured transparency in financial handling and verified that all proceeds were directly donated to the NGO without deductions.
Reflection
This CAS experience allowed me to connect my passion for basketball with meaningful community service. It strengthened my sense of responsibility and empathy, demonstrating how personal interests can contribute to social betterment. By embodying the Caring learner profile, I learned that genuine compassion is shown not only through intentions but through consistent and thoughtful action.
The tournament was both an athletic and humanitarian success, emphasizing the power of collective effort in creating a positive impact within the community.
