As part of my CAS journey, I participated in a Rural Immersion program at Kilad Campsite near Vansda–Waghai Road from 16th to 21st December 2024. This experience allowed me to explore rural life, understand community challenges, and actively contribute through creative and service-based activities. The program blended all three CAS strands Creativity, Activity, and Service as we interacted with villagers, organized sessions for children, and reflected on the importance of empathy, sustainability, and collaboration.
LO1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth:
Throughout the immersion, I recognized my strengths in communication, adaptability, and teamwork. Interacting with villagers and leading group activities showed me that I could connect easily with people from different backgrounds. However, I also realized that I needed to improve my patience and cultural sensitivity when communicating across language barriers. This understanding helped me become more self-aware and open to personal growth.
LO2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills:
The rural environment posed several challenges, such as adjusting to limited facilities, unfamiliar routines, and minimal access to technology. Despite these, I learned to adapt quickly and develop problem solving skills. Facing these challenges strengthened my independence and ability to think creatively in new environments. I also learned how to balance comfort with empathy and teamwork, making the experience both humbling and transformative.
LO3 – Initiate and plan a CAS experience:
As a group, we took the initiative to design and plan a playful game and dance activity for the village children. We brainstormed ideas, divided responsibilities, and practiced before performing. This activity allowed us to bring joy to the kids while building our own leadership, creativity, and coordination skills. Seeing the children laugh and participate enthusiastically made the effort worthwhile and showed me the value of thoughtful planning and teamwork.
LO4 – Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience:
The entire immersion required consistent effort and participation from start to finish. Long days of travel, community work, and interaction were physically and mentally demanding, yet I stayed motivated and involved throughout. My commitment to contributing meaningfully never wavered, and I ensured I actively participated in every group task and reflection session.
LO5 – Demonstrate skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively:
Collaboration was at the heart of this experience. I worked closely with my classmates, teachers, and villagers to complete activities and organize events successfully. Working in groups taught me the importance of communication, listening, and respecting different opinions. I learned that effective teamwork creates stronger results and helps overcome challenges more efficiently.
LO6 – Engagement with issues of global significance:
Through this immersion, I engaged directly with issues such as poverty, access to education, and sustainable living. Observing how villagers managed resources responsibly and maintained harmony with nature gave me a better understanding of global challenges like inequality and sustainability. It made me realize the importance of supporting such communities and promoting inclusive growth.
LO7 – Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions:
During our stay, we made sure that every action and interaction was guided by respect and ethical awareness. We approached our service with humility, ensuring we did not impose our ideas but rather learned from the villagers way of life. Handling these interactions with sensitivity and integrity helped me grow as a principled individual and strengthened my moral understanding of service.
Conclusion:
My rural immersion at Kilad Campsite was a transformative experience that helped me grow as a more Caring, Reflective, and Open-minded learner. It taught me to value simplicity, collaboration, and gratitude. Engaging directly with rural communities not only expanded my worldview but also reminded me of the importance of empathy and ethical action in every aspect of life. This CAS experience will remain one of the most meaningful and impactful parts of my IB journey.
