I took up Basketball as my HDP sport to learn and play over the course of a year. I chose this sport because it helps in building quick reflexes, strategic decision-making, physical endurance, and precision. Basketball is a fast-paced team sport played on a court where players use dribbling, passing, and shooting to score points. It heavily focuses on agility, hand-eye coordination, teamwork, and mental focus.
Although it is a team sport, individual contribution and performance also play a major role in achieving success. Over the past 9 months of learning and engaging in Basketball as a part of my CAS experience, I’ve developed both technical skills—like ball control and shooting—as well as communication and collaboration skills. This journey has strengthened my self-discipline, resilience, and team spirit, aligning with the core CAS learning outcomes and helping me grow into a more committed, adaptable, and goal-oriented individual.
learning outcome 1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
Participating in Personal Sports at school has helped me recognize both my strengths and areas that need improvement. I discovered that I have strong endurance and a good sense of coordination, which allowed me to perform well in certain activities. However, I also realized that I need to work on my flexibility and consistency in training. Through regular practice and feedback from my coaches, I’ve been able to set personal goals to improve these areas. This experience has encouraged me to push myself further and become more disciplined in maintaining a balanced and effective fitness routine.
lerning outcome 2 – Personal and Social:
Participating in the ISSO (International Schools Sports Organisation) Basketball Tournament was a major personal challenge that contributed to my growth both as an athlete and as an individual. Competing with international schools from across the nation meant facing high-level opponents with different play styles and strategies. This pushed me to improve not only my physical fitness and technical skills but also my mental resilience and ability to stay calm under pressure.
Training for the tournament involved regular practice sessions, team drills, and strategic planning, all of which tested my discipline and commitment. Balancing academics alongside this preparation was difficult at times, but it taught me time management and the importance of consistency. On the court, I had to quickly adapt to different game situations, take initiative during key moments, and communicate effectively with my teammates to keep our performance sharp.
Beyond the sport itself, the tournament gave me the opportunity to interact with students from a variety of schools and backgrounds. This helped me develop confidence in social settings and encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone. Whether it was through post-game conversations, team bonding moments, or observing different coaching styles, I gained a deeper understanding of collaboration, sportsmanship, and cultural diversity.
Learinng outcome 3 – Initiate and plan a CAS experience.
As part of my involvement in the ISSO (International Schools Sports Organisation) Basketball Tournament, I demonstrated initiative by taking an active role in both the preparation and execution of our team’s participation. In the weeks leading up to the event, I dedicated time beyond regular school hours for training, focusing on improving my individual skills and contributing to team strategies. I helped coordinate practice sessions, communicated with teammates to ensure consistent attendance, and worked with our coach to identify areas of improvement for the team.
The ISSO tournament brought together international schools from all over the country, creating a highly competitive and dynamic environment. Participating in such a large-scale event required planning not just physically, but mentally and emotionally. I made it a point to prepare myself through discipline, time management, and goal-setting, ensuring I could perform at my best during the tournament.
LO4 – Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience
Throughout my involvement in Physical Sport at school, I consistently demonstrated perseverance and commitment by actively participating in training sessions, maintaining regular attendance, and pushing myself to improve both physically and mentally. There were times when it was challenging to stay motivated—especially during intense drills or when balancing academics with practice—but I stayed dedicated to the process. By setting personal fitness goals and working steadily towards them, I built discipline and resilience. My ongoing commitment not only helped me grow as an athlete but also strengthened my overall mindset, proving that persistence is key to meaningful progress.
LO5 – Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively.
Participating in this in-school PS activity provided a meaningful opportunity to develop and showcase my ability to work collaboratively with others. From the initial planning stages to the final execution, teamwork was essential. We each had unique roles and responsibilities, and by communicating clearly and supporting one another, we were able to stay organized and motivated throughout the process.
One of the most valuable skills I developed was active listening—taking the time to understand my peers’ ideas and viewpoints before offering feedback or suggestions. This helped create a respectful and inclusive environment where everyone felt heard and valued. Additionally, I learned how to manage differences in opinion by finding common ground and focusing on our collective goals rather than individual preferences.
Working in a group also enhanced my problem-solving abilities. Whenever we encountered challenges, such as time constraints or unexpected obstacles, we brainstormed solutions together and adjusted our plans as needed. This flexibility and shared responsibility led to a greater sense of accomplishment once we completed the activity successfully.
