Basketball Tournament (Project)

Overview

For our CAS Project, Prem and I organised a charity basketball tournament aimed at raising funds for Divyang, a charity that supports visually impaired children in enjoying sports. The event was held at Vesu Villas and was open to players under 18, with each player paying an entry fee of Rs. 300. With six teams of three, we managed to involve 18 participants in a competitive yet fun environment.

The tournament followed a 3v3 league format, with matches played until 21 points or around 20–25 minutes. In total, the tournament lasted about 4–5 hours. All proceeds from the entry fees, along with any additional donations, went directly to Divyang, allowing us to combine our passion for basketball with meaningful community service.

This required a lot of planning and coordination, especially balancing schoolwork with event preparation. We also had to be adaptable on the day itself, ensuring matches ran smoothly, participants stayed hydrated, and disputes were resolved fairly.

Reflections on CAS Learning Outcomes

  • LO1 (Strengths & Growth): Through this project, I discovered my strengths in organisation and coordination. Managing player registrations, creating match schedules, and handling logistics came quite naturally to me. I was able to ensure that every participant knew their timings and that the tournament stayed on track. However, I also realised that I needed to work on my ability to make quick, confident decisions under pressure—especially when unexpected issues arose, such as score disputes or players arriving late. I learned that being a leader means staying calm and composed even when things don’t go as planned, and I grew more confident in handling such situations by the end of the event.
  • LO2 (Challenges & New Skills): One of the biggest challenges was managing 18 players who were all energetic, competitive, and eager to win. Keeping the matches on schedule while maintaining a positive atmosphere was not easy. This experience helped me build patience and develop stronger leadership skills. I also learned to manage my time effectively, balancing school responsibilities with tournament preparation required consistent effort and planning. Additionally, I improved my communication skills, especially when addressing participants, explaining rules, and resolving minor conflicts fairly.
  • LO3 (Initiative & Planning): From the very beginning, this project required initiative and strategic planning. Prem and I had to come up with a tournament format that was both efficient and engaging. We planned the match structure, budgeted entry fees, and made sure all funds were transparently documented for donation. We also coordinated with the venue to confirm timings and ensure smooth execution. This process taught me the importance of anticipating problems before they occur and the value of being proactive rather than reactive. The project gave me insight into what goes into running a small-scale event successfully.
  • LO4 (Commitment & Perseverance): There were several moments where things didn’t go as expected, some players backed out at the last minute, and we had to quickly adjust the schedule and team arrangements. Despite these challenges, we stayed determined and flexible. We also faced small logistical hurdles, such as arranging enough water for players and ensuring the venue was ready on time. Our commitment to the cause and to each other kept us motivated throughout. Seeing the event conclude successfully made all the hard work and perseverance worthwhile.
  • LO5 (Collaboration): Working with Prem made this project not only more manageable but also more enjoyable. We divided tasks according to our strengths, while I handled registrations and scheduling, he took charge of scorekeeping and match coordination. We constantly communicated to ensure that everything ran smoothly and supported each other whenever difficulties arose. This experience reinforced how vital teamwork is to achieving shared goals, and it showed me that effective collaboration requires trust, respect, and open communication.
  • LO6 (Global Significance): Our project connected deeply with a global issue, accessibility and inclusivity in sports. By donating all proceeds to Divyang, we were helping visually impaired children experience the joy of playing sports, something many take for granted. It made me realise how sports can be a unifying and empowering tool that transcends physical limitations. This understanding gave the project a deeper sense of purpose beyond just fundraising, it became about promoting equality and inclusion on a larger scale.
  • LO7 (Ethics & Choices): Throughout the project, we were mindful of making ethical choices. We intentionally kept costs low by using minimal equipment and avoiding unnecessary expenses so that more funds could be donated. During the tournament, we ensured fair play and transparency in scoring and match decisions. We also maintained honesty when communicating with participants and the charity. These decisions reflected our commitment to integrity and fairness, and they reminded me that ethical conduct is crucial in both community service and leadership.

Outcome

The tournament not only raised Rs. 3000 but also fostered physical activity, teamwork, and community spirit. More importantly, it allowed us to use our love for basketball to support a global cause of inclusivity in sports.

This project taught me that service can be meaningful when aligned with personal passions, and it reinforced the idea that even small, local initiatives can have a lasting impact on others’ lives.
