Community Service – [Service]

LO1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth:
Through this community service, I recognized my strength in communication and patience while explaining technological concepts to children. I was able to simplify complex digital tools into easy-to-understand steps, which helped the students feel comfortable and confident using Chromebooks. However, I also identified areas for growth, such as managing a group with varied learning speeds and maintaining engagement for longer periods. This experience made me more aware of my teaching and leadership style, encouraging me to improve my instructional clarity and adaptability. I also learned to be more empathetic and flexible, realizing that teaching requires constant reflection and adjustment according to the learners’ needs.

LO2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process:
One of the main challenges I faced was bridging the digital literacy gap among students who had little or no prior exposure to technology. I had to design interactive and age-appropriate lessons to keep them engaged while ensuring everyone progressed together. Overcoming this challenge helped me develop several new skills—such as creative problem-solving, instructional design, and the ability to use visuals and real-life examples to aid understanding. I also improved my public speaking and time management skills, as I needed to plan each session effectively. Through this process, I learned that challenges are valuable learning opportunities that help enhance both technical and interpersonal skills.

LO3 – Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience:
I took the initiative to organize this community service project from scratch, beginning with identifying a local group of children who lacked access to basic digital education. I then outlined clear learning goals—such as understanding Google Docs and Google Slides—and created a structured lesson plan for each session. I also gathered resources like Chromebooks, prepared presentation slides, and arranged a schedule that balanced both learning and fun activities. Effective planning ensured that the sessions ran smoothly and achieved their intended outcomes. This process taught me how to take initiative, manage logistics, and execute an educational project that created a positive community impact.

LO4 – Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences:
Teaching young children how to use technology required patience, consistency, and ongoing commitment. Some sessions were challenging, especially when students forgot earlier lessons or faced technical issues. Despite these difficulties, I remained dedicated to ensuring every student learned and gained confidence with digital tools. I continued refining my teaching strategies based on their feedback and learning pace. This perseverance not only helped the students succeed but also strengthened my sense of responsibility and determination. The experience reminded me that meaningful service involves consistent effort and a genuine desire to make a difference, even when immediate results are not visible.

LO5 – Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively:
This project involved collaboration with teachers, fellow volunteers, and community organizers to coordinate class times, prepare materials, and ensure that all students had devices. Working together required effective communication, mutual respect, and understanding of each team member’s strengths. I learned the importance of teamwork in achieving shared goals—especially when planning activities, troubleshooting technical issues, or supporting each other during teaching sessions. Collaborating also helped me realize how combining different perspectives and skills leads to more engaging and efficient outcomes. The sense of unity and shared purpose made the experience more rewarding and reinforced the value of collective effort in community service.

LO6 – Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance:
Digital literacy is a global issue that affects education, employment, and equality across the world. By teaching children how to use Chromebooks and basic online tools, I contributed to bridging the digital divide—a challenge many underprivileged communities face. This experience deepened my understanding of how access to technology empowers individuals and opens opportunities for lifelong learning. It also made me reflect on the global need for inclusive education and the role of technology in promoting social progress. Through this project, I actively participated in addressing an issue that has far-reaching implications for equality and sustainable development in today’s digital age.

LO7 – Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions:
Throughout this experience, I was mindful of the ethical responsibilities involved in teaching children about technology. I ensured that my lessons emphasized safe and responsible internet use, protecting personal information, and respecting digital content ownership. I also treated every student equally, regardless of their skill level, and created a supportive environment that encouraged curiosity without judgment. Ethically, I recognized the importance of using my knowledge to empower others rather than simply showcasing my skills. This reflection made me aware that every action in community service carries moral weight—especially when working with young learners who are forming their understanding of digital ethics and responsibility.
