The ISSO tournament is one of the most exhilarating sporting events happening every year, which involves students from IB schools across India. It is an occasion where athletes have the opportunity to display their sporting talent in front of family and friends, and test their athletic skills against students the same age as they are capable. The tournament is rewarding in a variety of ways, most importantly in developing a spirit of teamwork, discipline and sportsmanship. For many of us who are passionate about sport, the ISSO tournament is our moment to shine outside the classroom, demonstrating that excellence can be shown outside of academics. Additionally, we have been able to connect with students from all over the country increasing the uniqueness and memorability of experience.
This year, I was privileged to have the chance to play in the category of football, representing my school as I competed in Indore. Playing in the ISSO tournament was not just another sporting event for me, but a chance to trial my years of training, gain competition experience, and showcase competing at a high level. Along the way, I met several students from various other schools—although in competition, friendships were still created and experiences shared on and off the pitch.
LO1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
After I was chosen for the team, I took some time to honestly assess my performance and physical abilities. I found that while I had reasonable ball control and awareness of what was going on during the game, my endurance and agility were not where I wanted them to be. To work on this, I committed myself to drills, fitness and conditioning training. Over the months of preparation, I steadily began to see improvement, which gave me faith heading into the tournament.
LO2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
The reality of the competition was anything but simple. Competing in front of a large crowd, hearing constant shouts from the coach and even hearing a couple of insults from fans of the opposing team created a lot of mental strain. Initially, not being occupied by the distractions in the crowd to focus on just the game was a challenge as well. However, these experiences helped me develop some mental resiliency as a player. I learned how to take that pressure and use it to create motivation and to try to give my best effort on the field. Another notable learning experience for me was trusting my teammates–realizing that football is not about one moment in time of an individual, it is surrounded around the whole team working together as one unit.
LO5 – Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
Fundamentally, football is dependent on exact coordination and communication. Each pass, movement, and tacit or explicit strategy hinges on how well players work together. I highlighted that during the tournament, our training in non-verbal communication, critical thinking, and decision-making was absolutely crucial. For example, when we faced pressure situations in the games, quick analysis, and communication allowed us to adjust our understanding, then proceed to play as best we could.
However, that was not all the time. During one of our knockout matches, lack of consensus within the team resulted in an argument during the game, and we lost sight of the other players’ incredible contributions. This experience reminded me how easy it is through a breakdown in collaboration to experience defeat. Conversely, when we worked collaboratively to engage each other and supported each other, our performance was exponentially better. That taught me the value of collaboration—not only for success in football, but in anything in life.
Final Reflection
Reflecting on the experience, ISSO was far more than a mere football tournament. It gifted me memories that I will treasure forever – from the emotions associated with playing in competitive matches to the camaraderie built between players from across the country. Beyond the technical aspects of football, I also grew in general self-discipline, adaptability, and respect for teamwork.
The entire occasion taught me to challenge my boundaries, emphasized the importance of consistent practice, and reminded me that success doesn’t come just from a desire to succeed – success comes only from self-discipline and hard work. I am thankful for the opportunity to represent my school in this event, and I hope to have the increased ability of leveraging this opportunity in the years ahead.
