CAS Creativity Experience: Corporate Hustle – Choosing FIFA Tournament Location

Introduction

Under the auspices of a CAS Creativity activity, I engaged in the Corporate Hustle, a challenge that is based on simulation, where the team I was part of needed to pick the most appropriate place to hold the FIFA tournament. Analytical skills, creativity, as well as team spirit, were needed as the team considered issues like infrastructure, accessibility, and international appeal. We were presented with two surprise challenges that pushed us to review and reverse the initial choice, making the task vibrant as well as demanding.

LO1: Identifying Strengths and Areas for Growth

This task helped me identify where I excel in logical thinking as well as arguing points persuasively to defend a location decision. I was capable of reviewing situations diligently and articulating the concepts to the group. I came to the conclusion that I must also work on being less rigid, as I struggled to adapt during the initial moments the plan was jeopardized. This further underscored the need to be adaptable as a skill to work on the next time I undertake a creative problem-solving exercise.

LO2: Undertaking Challenges and Developing New Skills

These unplanned issues pushed us to think fast. When new obstacles arose, i.e., restricted infrastructure or political problems at the site we had selected, we could rapidly reassess other options. This scenario refined the skill of strategic flexibility for me and enhanced the capability to deal with sudden surprises. I realized that problems usually breed solutions, as the altered decision was more innovative and inclusive than the initial plan.

LO6: Engagement with Issues of Global Significance

Selecting a venue to host an international sporting event like FIFA had a great deal to do with global dimensions like economic growth, cultural opening, and global cooperation. We analyzed the effect that hosting the event would have on the local host city as much as the international market, all the way through to environmental concerns, as part of opening up the international dimension of the decision-making process within sport management where innovation is balanced by responsibility.

Conclusion

Overall, the Corporate Hustle task was a valuable CAS Creativity activity that allowed me to identify areas where I am capable and where I need improvement (LO1), adaptation to unexpected challenges, as well as the acquisition of new skills (LO2), as well as experiencing the global dimensions of sporting activities (LO6). It developed the Thinker learner profile trait, as I was capable of tackling sudden problems creatively, flexibly, as well as broadly. The experience also connected strongly to the key concept of Change, as it showed how unexpected challenges require flexibility and innovation in decision-making.
