Rock Climbing (Activity)

LO1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for personal growth

One of the main things I realized during rock climbing was how much my upper body strength needed improvement. In the beginning, I struggled a lot to pull myself up and keep my grip on the climbing wall. But after a few attempts, I started noticing that my body was adapting, and my technique was improving. This experience helped me realize that I have the strength to keep going when things get hard and that I can develop my physical strength with consistent practice. I also realized that my problem-solving skills improved when I started planning my climbing route to make it easier for myself. This taught me that by identifying my weaknesses and strengths, I can always work on getting better.

LO2 – Demonstrate that there are challenges developing new skills in this process

Rock climbing was a completely new activity for me, which required both physical and mental flexibility. I faced the challenge of learning proper climbing techniques, understanding the route grading and overcoming fatigue. Through continuous practice, I developed new skills, such as foot placement strategy and skilled handhold, which improved my overall climbing capacity.

LO4 – Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences.

Rock climbing required consistent effort and perseverance, as progress didn’t come instantly. There were times when my arms felt too fatigued to continue, especially after multiple climbs in a session, but I pushed through, determined to improve. One particularly frustrating moment was when I kept slipping at the same tricky overhang section, unable to find the right grip. My coach advised me to engage my legs more by using a “Toe Hook” technique—hooking my foot around a hold to stabilize myself. At first, it felt unnatural, but after multiple attempts, I finally got past the obstacle. Despite setbacks, I kept attending sessions, determined to refine my skills and lower my climbing time. Taking on the additional responsibility of being a belayer also required focus and patience, as I had to stay attentive for long periods, ensuring my partner’s safety. The experience reinforced the importance of perseverance, proving that steady effort leads to tangible improvement.

LO 7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions

Safety is the most essential element of rock climbing. During the process, I learned the importance of harness, using safety equipment and following the instructions given by the teacher. I always double checked the harness and tightened it to the maximum limit, used all the safety equipment including helmet and trusted the belayer who was holding the rope. These decisions and choices made by me had a positive consequence on the outcomes where I was comfortable and had a trust that I won’t atleast fall down.
