fresher’s party – creativity

The fresher’s party was organised to welcome the new IBDP batch of 2027. The purpose of the event was to make the students feel comfortable, included, and excited about starting their IBDP journey. As part of the organising team, I was mainly involved in the decoration and preparation of the venue. We planned interactive activities, games, and performances, while my role focused on designing props, putting up decorations, and contributing to the creative side of the event.

LO 1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
This experience helped me notice that I am confident when it comes to sharing ideas and coordinating tasks with others. I was able to communicate clearly with my teammates about how to divide work and how to manage time effectively. At the same time, I realised that I need to work on my creative execution skills — for example, cutting and painting props neatly was more challenging for me. So while I used my organisational strength, I also recognised areas where I can grow.

LO 2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills
A challenge I faced was handling artistic tasks like sketching and painting large props, which I had very little prior experience with. At first, it was frustrating because the results didn’t come out the way I imagined. But after practicing and asking for guidance from my peers, I improved and was able to contribute meaningfully. This helped me develop patience and also gave me confidence in trying hands-on creative work that I usually avoid.

LO 3 – Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience
Before the event, our team held meetings to discuss the theme and different responsibilities. I took initiative by suggesting how we could split tasks so that each person had a clear role. For example, while some were focusing on preparing posters, others worked on arranging the stage and music setup. This planning helped us avoid confusion and saved time. Being part of the initial preparation stage showed me how important it is to plan ahead and assign responsibilities early.

LO 4 – Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences
The decoration and setup process required commitment because it was both time-consuming and repetitive. Sometimes we had to stay back longer than expected to finish the work, especially when fewer volunteers were available. I remained consistent and made sure to complete whatever task was assigned to me, even when it felt tiring. Sticking through the entire preparation process taught me perseverance and responsibility, since the success of the event depended on everyone doing their part.

To conclude, the Fresher’s Party turned out to be a really meaningful CAS experience for me. It gave me a chance to contribute to the school community and at the same time develop different skills like communication, teamwork, planning, and patience. While preparing for the event, I also realised how important it is to work as a team and how teamwork makes things much easier and better than doing them alone. I faced challenges like workload, tight deadlines, and learning tasks I had never done before, but overcoming them gave me confidence. These challenges taught me lessons that I can carry forward and use to handle future projects more effectively.
