Music has always been a passion of mine, and when I had the opportunity to perform as a pianist in my school band, I saw it as a perfect CAS experience under creativity. This performance was not just about playing an instrument; it was about collaboration, personal growth, and perseverance. FSMUN is one of the most prestigious events held in our school, and when I received the offer to play at the event, I didn’t hesitate to pick up such a wonderful opportunity. In the FSMUN, there are delegates from all over the city, and the audience is huge, hence, it was also a valuable experience that helped me gain confidence. However, there were still some challenges that I didn’t keep in mind when I took the offer.
Lo1: Recognizing My Strengths and Areas for Growth
Preparing for this performance allowed me to identify my strengths and the areas where I needed to improve. I have always been confident in playing the keyboard solo, but performing as part of a band required me to synchronize with other school mates. In the process of preparation, I sacrificed a lot of my free slots and playtimes to practice and enhance my skill. While I was practicing, I realized that while my technical skills were strong, I needed to work on my ability to adapt to the band’s rhythm and dynamics. Therefore, I started communicating with my band mates, and employed methods that would help me with synchronization.
Lo2: Overcoming Challenges and Developing New Skills
One of the biggest challenges I faced was adjusting to the band’s unique style and maintaining tempo consistency and adjusting to the rhythm. I had to refine my listening skills, learn to respond to the cues, and adjust my playing accordingly. Additionally, performing in front of an audience required confidence and stage presence, which I developed through rehearsals. Overcoming these challenges helped me build new skills, not just in music but also in teamwork and adaptability. Overall, this also contributed to developing my social skills, and other learner profile attributes.
Lo4: The Importance of Commitment and Perseverance
Rehearsing for the performance demanded dedication and consistency. Even after school, I visited my friend’s house to practice with him. During this process, there were times when we faced difficulties—miscommunication, timing issues, and even moments of self-doubt. However, my commitment to the performance kept me motivated. Through continuous practice and collective effort, we were able to deliver a successful and enjoyable performance. This experience reinforced the importance of perseverance in achieving excellence.
Playing the keyboard in a band was more than just a musical performance; it was an enriching learning experience that contributed to my CAS journey. It allowed me to recognize my strengths, tackle challenges, and stay committed to a goal.
